Thanks, it was not turning on at all, no green light. So half an hour ago I opened it and one of the tiny cables was lose, fastening it fixed it. Now it powers on again. The green light stopped blinking, whats next, just put in a neg holder? How far must you put it in? (btw I have a second hand ED 8000)
My 9000 is very finicky about turn on order. I do this: turn on the computer (or restart), turn on the scanner and wait for the light to stop blinking, then open nikon software.
Then, put in the neg holder slowly, let it grab it, and it will do the rest. Finally, go back to the screen and work with the software.

What software are you using? What tray are you using?
I have been using the tray for 12 35mm frames in two strips of 6 a lot today. It should suck the tray in about 1/2 of its length and then wait for the software to control it. You can then ask for a preview of all twelve frames.

I use Nikon Scan4. After a few times trying it now seems to work. It seems the scanner was a bit off from the shipment. Indeed it takes the tray itself and scans the images. Wonder whether I can make this scanner run under Lightroom 2, well will try that next week.
I didn't know that you could scan directly into Lightroom. As bad a rap as Nikon Scan gets, I still use it. If you understand its quirks, it will work fine.
