Problem shooting raw?

I was wondering if someone could give me some insight here. I was shooting Raw in a studio setting (Strobes with sync cord and such) with the RD-1 and after about 15 to 20 shots the camera froze and I couldn't preview the pics. First it said "Picture cannot be displayed", then it said "SD card error."

I'm not sure what to do about it.

Have you tried a different card?
I'd recommend formatting the dodgy card, it might have some errors on it. First plug it into a computer and recover any images you can using recovery software.
If it reoccurs only on one card it might be hinting at a card failure so I'd replace it before you loose any photos.

What brand of SD card would you recommend for the RD-1? I have the 2GB Kingston SD cards. I bought an 8GB Kingston and my RD-1 rejected it, but I can use it for my D-Lux 3.

I have used all sorts of cards, including Sandisk, Kingston, and other cheapies, all of which work well sith the EPSON, as long as you stay up to the magic 2gig limit.
I have been also swapping my cards from my canon to my Epson to my pentax and they are all still great.

It's not just the Epson. IME, many or possibly all digital cameras run more reliably if the card is formatted in the camera itself, rather than on a computer or in some other camera.

I'm using 2GB Sandisk Ultra II s, seem to recall they were tested somewhere and came out better than the lexar versions. (2GB is the max for the RD1)
They work fine between my GRD and RD1 and two computers.
Don't think any newer faster ones make a difference in the write times as the RD1 is the bottleneck.

I just ordered 2 2GB Extreme III's of newegg. I'm hoping that my card that I mentioned is the problem and not the camera.

it's your card... I've been using Sandisk ultra II's 2gb, and shooting raw+jpeg, I get about 160 shots per card, no chugging at all. I di have a transcend card, a 1gb 30x and it suffered from the symptoms you listed...

i JUST had a relative experience... using sandisk 2 gb in r-d1s with no problems at all! forgot the sandisks at home and picked up some generic 512 kingstons... card error. go figure...

I have used Sandisk, Lexar and Kingston cards of up to 2GB in both my R-D1 and GRD without any problems, but I do make a point of always formatting the card in the camera before use.

I think I determined which card was giving me the trouble. I've reformatted it and am going to give it one more chance. After that I'm trashing it. I just received my sandisk extreme III 2GB cards. I've heard only good things about these cards so I'm hoping it's true.

one thing I noticed when I started using ultra II's and faster, battery drain was way less. Slower cards take more power to write to, so it was a welcome side affect...

Did anyone find that when shooting raw format the camera slows down? If you shoot 3 or 4 quick shots the camera freezes a bit and won't shoot. Did anyone find this to be true?

perfectly normal as the buffer fills up, I think it's like 4-5 shots.
