I have had some problems today scanning five b&w films that I developed. I have scanned about 350 films on the scanner before and have not had this problem until today.

Every once in a while the computer seems to drop communcations with the scanner, resulting in an error message and the Epson Scan application closing. The scanner keeps on making a continuous sound, but it dosen't sound like it normaly does when scanning. The workarround was to turn the scanner off and on and restart Epson Scan. Rebooting the computer did not make the problem go away any better than just restarting the scanner.

This happened at least once for every roll of film, but sometimes, it happened three or four times in a row, without a single frame beeing scanned.

The USB connection seems fine, the hub between the scanner and computer has power. Nothing has changed in this setup for at least six months. I have the latest driver/software from Epson. Well, actually, what has changed is the endless updates to Windows that install by themself once a week (or more often). Could this be the problem? I have a Windows 7 64-bit installation.

Has anyone else had similar problems? Of course, it could also be the hardware of the scanner that's gone bad...

Not having that trouble with W7 & V700. Check the gray 'lock' switch on the back of the scanner. Sometimes it slides over and gives an error like that.

Could be the updates - do you have the Silverfast scanning software? You may try to update the Epson or SE scanning software.

I would not use a hub and plug it into a USB port on the back of your computer that is connected directly to your motherboard (not to a card in a PCI slot). Also, make sure that you are using a good USB cable that is 6 feet long or less. You might swap out cables just to rule out it being a bad cable.

I've had problems with my V700 on Mac OS X when using a USB hub, as "Doug" suggests the best solution is to direct connect the scanner. Too many issues when using a hub.

A lot of the older drivers bundled with the hardware don't work with Win 7. I had to download "updated" versions for my old Epson scanner and printer. The Spyder 2 Express original driver doesn't like Win 7 too. My laptop has the slower Win 7 version, and the old drivers work fine there.

Its not the switch on the back (transportation button). I do have Windows 7 drivers from Epson. But I will try to bypass the usb hub, at least for test purposes. The strange thing is that it has worked well for a long time before yesterday...

Well, I shot and developed two more rolls and scanned them tonight...

I bought a new five meter long USB-cable tp onnecte the scanner directly to the computer, bypassing the hub. There was no problem whatsover scanning, so the error was in the hub (or possibly a bad usb-cable). Problem solved!

Thanks for all the help!
