Hi everybody. Yesterday i've obtained package from KEH with Canon P. It was marked as EX with wrinkled shutter. After reading few posts here about wrinkles I decided to go for it. Camera is perfect, i can see 35mm framelines with glasses, much better than with VI-L. The shutter is fine up to well 1/250, but 1/500 and 1/1000 has problems. Can this be easily repaired by CLA? There are NO Canon RFF specialists in Central Europe... just only for Leica and FSU. Thank's for your opinions.

Looks like your shutter is capping, which is where one curtain overtakes the other. Most commonly noticed at the higher shutter speeds. Anybody who can work on a Leica can work on the shutter of this Canon, the mechanisms are very similar. You can do it yourself too, if you have the proper tools.

Canon P mechanism is so simple and straightforward that any experienced camera repair person can easily repair it. Just don't give it to someone who has only repaired modern cameras. A Leica service shop is very good. Foto Skoda in Prague perhaps?

It's true that Canon P has been largely unknown in Europe before eBay times. I don't think it was ever imported here.

Thanks you both, now i feel much better. I don't have proper tools nor skills, but i have good repairman for Hasselblad and Leica. I was worried if ill be forced to return it. It took more than a week at customs, even with FEDEX 🙁

I had a local camera repair guy here in Norway service and fix a Canon 7 a couple of years ago. He´d hardly seen Canon rangefinders before, but the thing came out just lovely.

It's an old camera. I wouldn't assume any old camera to work correctly w/o a good check up and adjustment. Getting the camera is only half the battle, now to get it serviced. Any repair tech that has experience w/ Leica or FSU cameras should be able to do a CLA on it.

Contact KEH. When I had an item that did not work as described, they sent me a free FEDEX shipping label for the exchange. The whole point of paying their somewhat higher prices is that warranty - make use of it.

Wrinkled shutter curtains on these Canons is common and does not mean a damaged shutter. Again the point of buying from KEH is that they screen the problems and back the product. By allowance I didn't mean shipping t back.

Absolutely return it, and make KEH pay for shipping. EX should work 100%. They have techs who are supposed to make sure of this before rating the item. The wrinkled shutter is indeed of no consequence.

So, the answer from KEH is: "I'm sorry to hear about the problem. Please accept my apologies. Please get an estimate for doing the CLA. If it is in the range you suggested, I will be glad to reimburse you for it." Canon P is in hands of professional Leica repairman.

Thanks everyone for your advices.
