hi all im new to this site and very glad to meet all of you
i use an RD1 and where glass's and love shooting at night
the problem im having is getting the double-image focused in the center of the
bright-line frame in dim lite
can anyone give me some suggestions in working this out

Try using the rangefinder split image function. Pick something that has a fairly strong vertical (with the camera horizontal) line(s) that runs through the rangefinder spot and is visible either side of it. The line should be continuous when in focus. This is usually easier in low light than trying to coinside the image within the spot.
If there are no strong lines try setting the focus by focusing on a brighter object thats at the same distance as your subject and then reposition the camera.

I don't know if this is a help, but I've found the rangefinder spot goes dim if your eye isn't in the middle of the viewfinder window. It's easy to be off center with glasses (I'm short sighted) and not realize it.
Try moving your eye around and see if there's a brighter spot for the rangefinder.
