Just wondering tonight as I saw a deal on a 6x6 projection kit come by, who still projects their slides?

Either 35mm or 6x6, or is there an even bigger size that can be projected?

I started wondering, would it not be a brilliant way to show your work in a gallery nowadays, where most people cannot even remember what projecting and watching slides was like at one time? 🙄🙄🙄

You can project slides if you have the equipment.

To me, scans, LCD and other stuff can work quite well.

LCD projectors that will connect to wi-fi I see at B & H.

Another feature is to use air drop. Bluetooth is used with wi-fi. This is an avenue for showing powerful creative shows and get your audience involved with their iPhones, tablet computers.

What you're talking about is old school and, in my opinion, not as doable for creating 21st century wow stuff that many demand today.

I guess it depends what results you are striving for.

I do slide projections.

A few years ago I worked assisting a street art show in Atlanta. They used slide projectors on huge buildings as well as on old buildings along the main Railroad running through Atlanta. It was really a great show!

In my opinion, nothing wrong with "old school" (hate that stupid term...). Retro, if you will, is fantastic for a gallery. But what do I know...😛

🙂

Hi Bill,

my aim would be to steer away from the modern, multi-media, easily-digestable approach and make people stop and wonder. See the Dave Burnett quote in the signature.

I'm only pondering this since it would essentially achieve two goals at once, I would get to show my works at a gallery (I have open options in several nearby, low-threshold galleries in the next year or so) and at the same time don't need to spend a kidney's worth in printing my works, but only a part of it (half a kidney's worth😉)

Hey Dave!

Hope you are well. Good to read that I'm not the only one (I was going to write 'nutter' but that would be entirely me myself and I, not you🙂) who considers this!

I love to project slides. Have many, MANY Carousel trays full--fun to dig out the old stuff and give it a go. Kodak Carousel projectors are dirt cheap now and a good lens is easy to obtain, too. I'd say go for it and be the old school....

I hate "old school".... but somehow "nutter" works for me!😛

Bill, we are classics, not old. 😀

And guess who got me started on slide projectors? Thanks , Paul!

I don't do galleries or museums, nobody would have me. But I do have a very good screen (inherited from my father-in-law) and a Kodak Carousal projector. When I throw those 5000 slides up on the screen, I can put anyone asleep.

😀 ten characters worth ^^^

So why is it Flickr does so well??? Is it because the viewer is not captive?

Just about every auditorium had a couple of high end units, school, and most companies. MF projectors were harder to come by but they were out there. They were big monkey bucks, though MF slides were wonderful.

The fun is finding a dissolve unit or two. You know with all the down sizing in Rochester I'd check Craig's list up that way. Perhaps EvilBay might be another source.

I've had a thought bouncing around in head to use some digital images, PowerPoint and create a good old fashioned slide show. So many things you do with PowerPoint that I was never able to do with five projectors. A fancy projector connected to my Mac and life is good.

Keep us in the loop, ask questions perhaps we can help, and please let us know how you make out.

I've always like projected slides and I would still like to get a projector for 6x6, as you get better image quality and square slides fill the screen more effectively.

Note that if you plan to project 6x6 slides, they expand and contract more with temperature changes, so they are best projected in glass mounts with anti-Newton ring glass.
