I've been wanting to try this for quite some time now:
I'd like to project patterns on a 3d surface (outdoor) with a projector for a shoot. Probably it would work best in low light or at night. Problem is, I may need shutter speeds as high as 1/500 or 1/1000. Also, I shoot B/W film, so ISO is limited to somewhere around 3200-6400.
Does anyone here have experience with this technique? What kind of specs should the projector have in terms of watt or lumen to be bright enough? Is the power of a regular projector comparable to let's say a studio light? I actually have very little knowledge when it comes to these things, so anything will help!

Your light source will be tricky - LEDs and many gas discharge types have flicker that becomes apparent at high shutter speeds. So that's something to keep an eye out for.

What is the desire for the fast shutter speed?

Have you considered using a gobo or slide projector on a studio flash head (Dedolight makes many such, at different price points) to achieve frozen motion (if that is the goal).

Or even something like this, using speedlights and a camera lens as a projector lens

thanks a lot for the hint! that thing looks interesting.
yes, i need the fast speeds to freeze motion. i think a flash as a projector might actually be the better solution.
i think i might try to build myself some kind of makeshift flash projector
