Purpose of RFF?

I don't know how to post POLLS and I think that folks have grown weary of them.

So I'll just ask for a response.

I thought the main purpose of RFF was to provide a site where we could display our picture taking efforts.

The other purposes that I think are important are providing a means to exchange info regarding the care and use of our gear, ideas and advice on processing film (or PS images) etc., selling/buying w/in the "community" and so forth.

Instead, too often as far as I can determine, this site acts as a "ranting station" for folks to polemicize on things like "Film is Dead" or a particular piece of gear is "proletarian" (or conversely, "dilletantish").

Tonight we even have a "poll" asking us our opinion of how long film will last with the original poster gloating that it will "add fuel to the fire"!

Why are we doing this to ourselves?

My "peeve" tonight is that the Gallery is screwed up. I went out in the dead of winter and took some pics that I would like to share with folks and cannot do that!

I am pissed about it. I think the Gallery is a hell of a lot more important to this site than another damned poll!

Whew - time to take a deep breath!

George,

A mission statement is a good idea.

I like the diversity of this group, even when the drama gets unbearable in the General Discussion Forum.

I decided my extended "pout" was absurd. Epsecially since I have the "ignore" option.

I like the new "X" avatar, but what I'd really like to see is one with Mecha-Godzilla.

Thanks to George for all his efforts in providing this website and all the hard work he has done to construst it and promote it.
RFF serves a great range of needs and anyone who doesn't like any particular aspect of RFF is obviously under no obligation to use that part of the website anyway.
Why bitch about something you rarely or never use but that others do use when there is plenty for all to see, do and respond to?
To each their own and to each, you're welcome.

I'm grateful to George and quite happy to wait a few days for what should be an even better service.

Oops, replace George with JT (i've ahd a hard day)

Thanks a million JT for all your work; the above was for you

Thanks desmo.

One of my "frustrations" tonight was that I took to heart your suggestion of adding some "context" to our uploads. So on several of the shots I had put in some commentary to provide time/place/context etc.

I can always do the upload another time. But the "commentary" was just on the site and so is lost.

Hey, not that it was great prose etc. But I thought that it added something to the images - much like you had suggested.

On a question of posting etiquette I dislike it when the thread title is a teaser and gives no real idea of the subject.

'My new M3 has arrived' is a far better title than 'Yes, at last!'

Yes, I hear you Jon.

My original post this past evening was:

http://www.rangefinderforum.com/forums/showthread.php?p=243060#post243060

You can see how few responses and views it got compared to this one!

Sometimes you have to "tease" - sorry if that offends some - but I still think showing pics here should be the "main event"....

Purpose of RFF?

Going by most of the recent activity and the subject matter of many recent posts RFF would appear to be primarily a site for camera collectors. Why else have something as ridiculous as a 'camera beauty contest'? 🙄 Actually using cameras seems to be somewhat down the list priorities.

And as a followup to Andy...I completely agree that visitors to this site would think it's about the gear. However, digging deep you realize it's about the photography and the sharing of knowledge and art.

Apug can be described at first glance as a bunch of fervently anti-digital crazies who consider anything below 12x20 negatives to be subminiature. However, they are also a great group.

Let's face it - groups like this thrive by having lots of members and just kind of stirring the pot. Threads like this come up when someone feels it's getting stirred the wrong way.

RFF is what its members are. Plain and simple.

The purpose of RFF is to have a growing community where information can be exchanged, develop friendships, buy/sell used gear; buy new stuff from the sponsors who support this site. 😎

I agree 100%.

Why is it that at any random time there are ten people in the Forums for every one person in the Gallery?

All around me people are shooting digital SLRs, some own film SLRs but I'm the only one using film and rangefinders. So I like a place where I can talk with others about my gear as well as my concern that film might be to expensive for me in the not too far future.

RFF is a good place for this.

As for galleries, I've got my own which suits me well.

Jorge has been telling us for days that a migration to a new server is coming. The site has been slow for weeks. Key features, such as the random display of gallery photo's, have been taken away to "bandaid" to situation. Another move to a new service provider would likely wipe out the gallery. It has caused havoc in the past.

This site runs on a computer. Maintenance is required. That means down-time, file-system migrations, and major screw-ups. If this was a pay-for-services site with a quality of service agreement that gives 99.99% availability, it would be different. It's not. It's a computer site and I'm amazed it does not screw up more often. Remember when all the attachments got deleted?

Dude, how is your blood pressure?

How is this for a mission statement

"HAVE FUN"

if a poll, post, member or what ever irks you, ignore them, it what ever.

You do have that power. We all do.

to answer your question, i come here to enjoy a little "discussion" wsith people that are interested in similar things like I am, and whose oppinion helps me develop myself in some way. I also like to see photos, and show some of mine. Only the third is "to exchange info regarding the care and use of our gear, ideas and advice on processing film (or PS images) etc., selling/buying w/in the "community" ".
But i respect your priorities, and i think that different oppinions and points of view is what makes life (on rff and in general) colourful. So please try to do the same (i e accept that your truth is not universal). How about that?

greetz and keep shooting

I don't know the purpose of the site really is, I guess that originally he had something in mind. "Mission statement" is WAY too corporate for me. I understand, but c'mon, whoever utter that phrase!

Anyway, IT'S AN INTERNET FORUM, GEORGE! I understand you were frustrated when you started this thread but jeeze, any internet forum is going to be a moving, changing entity, eh? Given that two of our members have had coronary episodes within the last few months, one just the other day, and many here share personal details from their lives and get support, why don't we just put this in context:

Photography is important to all of us, for some it's their livelihood. Some of us have way more GAS than others, some are content with one camera (for now 😛 )... Some upload lots of photos, and some have lots of photos they can't upload because they don't have access to adequate scanning (and/or can't afford a good scanner), don't have darkroom facilities that allow them process regularly, etc., etc. etc.

So here's my advice, and you get exactly you pay for: Enjoy what you can here. If you get frustrated at something/someone, practice deep breathing, meditate, centre yourself, take a week-long walk, whatever it takes to put things in perspective.

I like you George; you have good taste in cheese and that counts for much in my book. But I swear, sometimes I think your mom should have worked harder to teach you the value of silence when you're upset. Or maybe law school undid that lesson! 😉

Earl
P.S. I don't have a favourite film, Jan. Not enough shooting/processing time to figure that out. But the first roll of Kodak B&W I shot in the Tower 51 was wonderful, and the drugstore scanning was great. But I wonderful how it would have looked with another lens. Now I'm bugged by film/lens combination questions. When will the madness end? :bang:

Well, uh, I guess I'm the guilty one here.

But, I was, and still am genuinely curious to know, in a quantitative way, what everybody thinks.

Honestly, I'm not trying to pick a fight or stir up any angst. The fire I wanted to add fuel to was that of the civil and healthy discussion on the lifetime of film.

I do admit that last week I posted a totally frivolous poll -- in response to another frivolous poll. I've always felt at ease here, and felt comfortable injecting frivolity at times -- and still do. 🙂

I enjoy almost all of what I read and see here. What I like about this place is that threads seldom degenerate into that worn-out left vs. right endless-loop drek like they do on too many systems.

Even other photo boards have countless "my camera is better than yours" and "my way of doing things is better than yours" (of which F vs. D is a subset) threads but very seldom here.

One thing I appreciate here is the diversity, people who are different than I am, who live far away from me but are next-door neighbors here, those who use equipment and techniques that I don't, and different styles, and attitudes.

I may be missing the rough stuff, but I've never read anything here that annoyed me or insulted me to the point that I would get p*ssed off and leave, and it still baffles me why some do. One in particular an established writer whose opinions I valued and articles I still read.

Oh well, I guess I've ranted enough ...
