Pushing color is a bit different than pushing B&W since there are three color layers (with sublayers) to deal with. The whole process assumes on having the right chemicals for the right time (3:15) at the right temperature. Changing time with pushing can basically screw up this process on a layer by layer basis, which leads to funky colors.
That's not to say it can't work. Kodak gives advice on pushing Portra 800 and 400UC, but nothing on their slower films. I don't know if that's because these faster films have some design features to ensure better performance while pushing, or if it's because they think you're better off using a faster film instead of pushing a slow film.
I've pushed Gold 100 once - it didn't turn out bad, but it certainly didn't look as good Portra 400. The new 400 speed films are so good that I don't see the point of doing this if your goal is fine grain. But hey, it's worth a try. Test it out and post the results.
