Pushing HP5

I'll be taking a week or two next month to road trip and take photos. I have a couple of questions about pushing film. I want to play around with pushing HP5 to Asa 800 or 1600 just for fun and wanted to confirm that all I need to do is set my meter at those Asa setting and develop for that speed? If I was to use, say, a one stop yellow filter while pushing to 1600, would I adjust my aperture to compensate for the one stop while still metering for 1600? Leave the meter on 1609 and meter through the filter for correct exposure?

Yes you just pretend it's 1600 when you set your meter. If you are TTL metering that should take care of any filters you use. If it's handheld metering, you'd need to compensate of course.

Development - yes adjust your times to be whatever is advised for hp5 @1600 for your developer.

You can push hp5 to 3200.

The choice of developer makes a difference, especially for 1600. Which developer do you use?

Try Ilford DD-X. True ISO approaches 800.

I used HP5+ for pushing in HC-110 (hcB) @1600. I used massive developing chart to find developing time. Then on trip, I would load the roll and if lens has clean filter I would measure it as 1600. I used it for low light in the evening and indoor. If day was very bright, I was putting x3 orange filter and measure it as 800. Or yellow x2 filter and measure it as 1200. Same roll, same developing time.

I currently push HP5+ to 1000 as my low light film but have previously shot it at 1600 too. I've developed it at 1000 in Rodinal, and at 1600 in ID-11 and DD-X. Best results at 1600 were in DD-X, followed by ID-11 1:1, but I use Rodinal now as it's just what I have on hand. I wouldn't push much past 1000 in Rodinal though.

HP5+ at 800 is pretty lovely in Rodinal 1:50. Almost better than at 400 in anything...

Thanks everyone for the advice and examples. I just think the pushed film has an interesting look to it even in good light. I use Rodinal and DDX to develop anymore. I really like Acros in 120 with Rodinal. I'll be using Acros and FP4 in 120 and HP5 and Delta 100 in 35mm on this trip. I don't have room for darkroom printing, so I scan, and I've stayed with films that dry very flat for me. Love tri-x, but it curls like mad. I have some I put between heavy books for months that would never flatten out.
