puzzled on the noct

I just got a noct 0.95 and use it with the M9.

I knew it was hard to focus and from repetitive usage it seemed it like it was back focused to me, ie I had to focus closer in front to the point of a slight split image seen in order to get it in focus.

I thought it was backfocused and needed some calibration so I took it to Cafe Optik in Mayfair and let the technician get a go at it. He tried it with a shot and said that yes, it was fine and it was designed as such.

I am a little confused by this and is this a normal experience by most users? Not sure if it needs calibration so appreciate any help.

It definitely wasn't designed to back focus. Either your camera, your lens, or both need adjustment.

Has it got focus lash? i.e that it focusses slightly different coming from infinity opposed to coming from closeup ?

I'd check it on a tripod, at f/0.95, with your subject close up (let's say 6 feet away), you have almost no depth of field at all, so just you slightly rocking on your feet will give you mis-focused results. Put the camera on a tripod to take away this factor and see if you still have problems.

With lenses like this, I think often focus problems are inherent as the DOF is so shallow, even if it's perfectly calibrated, you need perfect eyesight too.

The .85 finder helps. I use the old F1.0 Noctilux on M6 bodies. Results are not good with the standard .72 finders but with my M6 .85 I can get focus right where I want it. The tripod is a good suggestion. Depth of field is quite thin wide open. Good Luck. Joe

Thanks for all the thoughts, I will send it down for servicing to be very sure.

I was sure it had focusing problems until the guy at Cafe Optik said it seemed fine, he just took and showed me some test shots which made me doubt my experiences.
