Just waiting for the mail to deliver a very good example of a Serenar 50 1.9 Collapsible.

I'd sure appreciate comments from anyone that have used this lens. Joe?...did you eveer acquire such a beast?

Thanks in advance.

i had one briefly, it was on the p that fell to the concrete. the metal hood took the brunt of the blow but the lens needed some work as well as the p.
it is a good lens, not a great lens though. sharp with low contrast and it has an appealing softness to the look of the pics.

Haven't used mine much and sorry don't have anything scanned as yet, but it seems fine, and looks very attractive on the camera.

Here is one on my IV-Sb and another in sepia

Only thing I find a wee bit of a nuisance is, not having click stops and the 'damping' (think it is just a felt 'washer') for the lens barrel when in the retracted position has worn and slacked off, so the lens barrel tends to creep out in the closed position, when it shouldn't. Seemingily, it's an easy fix to replace and it does lock into the open position securely with a quick 1/4 turn.

Finding original Canon 40mm filters is a bit a challenge but you may want to use a screw in hood instead.

It's a nice lens, similar in a lot of ways to the Summitar, although maybe a bit softer wide open. It gives that nice, dated look to b&w images especially. Check the lens carefully, as there is a possibility of haze, paint chips, etc. with these aged optics. I had one with a large paint chip adhering to an element.. right in the center, of course.. it responded beautifully to a cleaning. You won't be sorry you own one, imho.

Canon made clamp-on hoods, both round and rectangular. The size you want is likely to be 42 mm: but you'd best measure the outer diameter of the front ring of the lens.

For the rectangular hood, you would have to use a 42mm slip-on or 42mm clamp-on Series VI adapter. The 40mm screw-in Series VI adapter is only useful for round hoods.

The 50/1.9 rectangular hood is reasonably common, and usually comes with the 42mm slip-on adapter. (The 42mm clamp-on one is much later.) It's a very nice vented hood, whose venting is compatible with a wide variety of RF cameras.
