I'm not comfortable with the front element of that beautiful 40/1.7 going "naked," and here's a solution:

Inner ring 48-49mm step-up ring available from heavystar...

Middle ring is a 49mm UV filter...

Outer ring is a glassless ring, formerly a scratched filter.

The filter's width and the extra outer ring, make a short lens hood which does NOT disrupt the meter's cell at the top of the lens. With thanks to Ruben for the idea ;-) NOTE: Click on image again (+) ... it looks better, larger.

OK. Check around I believe that 48mm filters can be found. If not let me recommend the Hama Hood and come with a cap. It is 49mm. A little one sided sticky felt on the bottom of the hood tightens it up wonderfully. On the older rangefinders I have tried the rubber plunger hoods, which were substantially less by half but I found them to distracting when composing an image quickly. With the rectangle I am more comfortable. You need to experiment. Also, with the Canonet I like the wrist strap.

My Canonet came w/ a 48 mm skylight filter, which I've continued to use. Hadn't thought about a hood (I have not found that the lens flares badly), but Mike's approach has me thinking in might be worth looking for a step-up filter ring for a similar purpose. Many of the lenses for my Minolta slr use 49 mm filters and hoods...

I also use a wrist strap on mine. And I now have a cool case for it, like the one that Paul (Pesphoto) has for sale in classifieds. A great kit!

Mike, a collapsible rubber hood is awesome. It protects the lens ring from all direction.

Good morning guys; it's 7-AM in Jerusalem. I guess it's "different strokes for different folks." I've never done well with collapsible hoods, tho' it's good to know that 48mm filters are available. I have a small, black case into which my Canonet (pronounced Canon-ney ;-) + 3-ring setup ... fits into, perfectly.
