QL-17 question (sorry)

Hello All, and I apologize for being a pain in a..

I just installed a new mercury battery in my Canonet QL-17 GIII, and I have still not found a lens cap that fits my lens shade. I was wondering if by turning the aperture setting away from the "A" auto mode, if this would in effect, turn off the metering system and prevent it from draining the battery? I noticed that the metering system is inoperative, when I do this. Just hoping I could use it as an on-off switch, until I locate a proper lens cap.

Thanks! Once again, this group comes to the rescue. I refoamed the QL-17 yesterday, and I can see that it will get quite a bit of use. I think that the QL-17 GIII, the Olympus RC and my favorite, the Vivitar ES, will be my main rf's. I really like the Viv ES. Solid build, nice focusing patch, and great, sharp 40mm 1.7 lens. I inherited a "Walz Envoy" a couple of years ago. Looks to be more trouble than it's worth. One of thoise big heavy, hard to use rigs..... (attached is a pic of my Minox clone)

I also have a Canonet QL17 GIII. Last year I too found that the lens cap was missing. I went to a nearby camera shop & they didn't have anything in 48mm, which is the filter size for that lens. So they tried a generic 49mm snap-on cap that they had in stock & it works just fine. It cost about $4 or $5.

I thought that I'd check B&H (www.bhphotovideo.com) for your question - since it could be mine again too. They have lens caps for every conceivable size lens. $5 for the generic (Kaiser) & $10 for the fancy one (Schneider). Interestingly, they suggest measuring your lens for the outside dimension & then add a millimeter or 2. So I guess the 49mm lens cap is just the right size for that lens after all.

While it is possible to find a 48mm lens cap, you can use a 48mm to 49mm step-up ring and then use a 49mm lenscapo. The ring adss a littler extra depth to the front and helps shade the front element while the 49mm ring allows all of those 49mm filters you bought back in the 1980's to be used.

Thanks again guys. The problem is that I found those Vivitar made, metal screw on lens shades for my rangefinder's, and that changes the lens cap size requirements. The Viv lens shades are perfect for the rf's, and I just leave them on permanently. And, I found out today, that a 58mm cap fits perfectly on the QL-17 rig with it's new lens shade. So now I have the perfect lens shades and caps for all of my rangefinder's, except for the oddball sized 43.5mm Oly RC. I found the Oly made skylight filter for the Oly RC and a deep yellow (#15) filter for it. I know that they made a lens shade for that one, but I have yet to see, or find one. Oh well, just another excuse to frequent the used camera shops and swap meet's.....

As soon as I find the time, I'll take a shot of all the rf's with attached shades and way-cool straps.

Thanks. I found that a generic 58mm cap, fits on the lens shade perfectly. Also put an original mercury battery in it. I have even tracked down the original Olympus made hood, for my RC. Life is good. What's your opinion on the QL-17 lens quality? Really liking my Vivitar 35ES.
