QL17 popping open

I helped locate a Canon QL17 GIII for a friend about a year ago. It was fine at first, but she reports that recently the hinged cover at the back has taken to popping open, exposing the film to light and ruining the exposures. I no longer have this model to look at. Might there be a simple fix to the problem?
