Quality of a CLA

Reminds me of a Leica III I once saw advertised as a 'good user' followed by the caveat - one shutter curtain detached and rangefinder out of alignment!

Heh, well, I bought that camera... so hopefully the rest will be in good condition when it gets here. 😉

I probably overpaid but if the optics, rangefinder and bellows are in good condition I'm okay with it. If the B/T issue bugs me, I can try taking a look at that one myself.

Semantics are malleable, of course, words shift and change meaning, but still, "User" kind of demands that you can "use" it don't you think?

When I buy a camera rated as "good user", I expect it to function without significant flaws. It can be shaky, loud, rough to operate - but should, ultimately, god-damn operate.

Different ratings for cosmetics and mechanics are probably in order: Just this week, I bought a great-looking Mamiya C330 kit, with the 105mm and 55mm lenses. It functioned well, if somewhat roughly, and the leaf-shutters needed a bit of a workout before every shooting - but it justified the "user" rating the owner gave it. I still sent it in for a CLA anyway, since I prefer absolute reliability.

It has to be the eBay influence.

New, means it has only been used 5-6 years.

Like new, means it has only been used 10-20 years, and only fell off the roof of the car at 70mph twice.

Mint, means I am adding a piece of hard candy to the package.

Trashed, means it is being sold by one of the 5 honest sellers on eBay.

Working, means only a couple of parts are missing.

Clean, means I blew the cob webs off.

CLA, means I soaked it in solvent then dipped it in a barrel of used motor oil.

User, means I used it to drive some nails just last week, worked perfectly.

2 dozen #5 flashbulbs, only used once. (I actually saw such a listing).

Fresh film, dated November 1956.

No Returns, I am lying my arse off, but I said no returns in my listing so you can not do anything about it. The lady, used as a euphemism, actually told me I could not give her negative feedback because she said that in her listing.

If it's a leaf shutter, the older rim-set shutters won't move to T or B if the shutter is tensioned. Those speeds are selected with the shutter untensioned, and then you use the shutter release to open and close the shutter (again, with the shutter untensioned).

If it's a newer shutter, then it's a different issue.

The camera arrived. I'm guessing ZeissFan nailed it; perhaps there was confusion about when the camera can be set to T and B?

In any case, the settings are working fine for me. For those who saw the original ad with the repair persons name, their work looks good to me.

Goes back to the concept of asking unambiguous questions that are concise about the product you are buying. Advertising and marketing are at times a dark art and it's up to the consumer to pull back the curtains, open up the hood (or bonnet for those across the pond) and ask/see what's inside.

While I knew it before, my first purchase on EvilBay taught it to me again. No cables, no cards, nothing other than a camera.

There was a collapsible 'crion on eBay last week described as "user grade". The front element appeared to have been cleaned with a Brillo pad, and I would describe it as translucent rather than transparent.

I suppose if you get a really, really wrinkly model and need to flatter her...
