Sounds to me that you've just had some bad examples of MF folders & are paying the price for going the "discount" route.
I think you hit the nail on the head when you note that you could have, & IMHO should have, bought a "better and recently CLA'd folder." In my experience, a good, CLA'd & properly operating/calibrated, top of the line folder like a Super Ikonta B, Super Ikonta IV, or Agfa Super Isolette/Ansco Super Speedex, will cost about $250-350, but be a good, reliable shooter.
RFs in general, & folders in particular, have a lot more parts that can go wrong than an SLR. They also have some functional drawbacks, particularly lack of close focusing ability. That said, there are many folders out there, like the ones I mentioned above, that can do a very good job for general photography. They aren't as versatile as MF SLRs, but they aren't huge beasts, either. Because of their portability, I can use my Super Ikontas & Super Isolettes like I use a 35mm RF, whether I'm taking a landscape-type shot (http://static.flickr.com/26/101474859_3ad6862a44_o.jpg), a street shot (http://static.flickr.com/15/19234821_55aa5291ad_o.jpg), or an environmental portrait for a web site (http://static.flickr.com/33/45519736_6e3feff7f9_o.jpg). While they aren't super-sharp like those from a modern multi-coated lens, they're good enough for my purposes & I didn't have to schlep around a big SLR.

All of this is rather frustrating. I'd hoped for reasonable quality MF in a folder and it is just so hit and miss! I could buy a better and recently CLA'd folder from certo6 on ebay, but the better ones go for a couple of hundred dollars. Money that could go towards a more modern MF RF solution.
On the other hand, most modern MF RF sollutions are $500 + (with most being WAY ++++).
I'm beginning to think I'm wasting my time and money in this direction.
Any ideas or suggestions?
