Long Live Film!!!
Hi all.. (sorry for the stupid title...)
just wanted to share a lament of mine, and possibly a heads up for anyone here in tokyo.
Went down to mapcamera here in tokyo yesterday after work. An evil evil place i tell you.
Saw this prestine summicron 50 DR with caps & bubble but without any eyes, buttery focus, sharp clicks of the f stop, and beautifully clean, dustless, and hazeless glass.
However they wanted 765$ (or 85000yen) for that Summi!!!.
Ok, i know there's no way to compare with prices in the USA, but yeah... this is one clean summi, cleanest i've seen.
Tried to take pics of the summi with my lil cell phone camera for everyone here, but the old chap at the counter stopped me and mumbled something in japanese..
Any views? should i buy? bad bad bad...
(on a side note, do i really need the eyes?)

The best camera is one that still works!
A little expensive to my mind ... maybe with the goggles! I bought mine with eyes a year or so ago for $500.00 US in pristine condition off eBay.
The eyes incidentally aren't needed unless you want to close focus on an early M ... beautiful lens though.

ic.... thanks!!!
well.. yeah.. that's true... A tad expensive from what i thought too... but it's really pretty.
hmm eyes are for focusing on the earlier Ms? I have an M3 & M6, would the eyes be needed for the m3?
thanks!

On the M3 you can use the lens without the eyes as you can with other film M's. When you slip the eyes onto the mount when fitted to an M3 it allows you to use the closer focusing feature of the lens ... the focusing barrel moves over a central stop to use a different scale which allows focus down to .5 of a metre.

... likes film again.
I can't help you decide on the DR Summicron but I bought both, the M4-P and M4 from MAP camera via their on-line store. They have stealthy prices, much more expensive compared to the US or European market but they provide a 6 month warranty and you don't have to pay import taxes to Japan.

If you buy and try chasing down a pair of goggles, I think there are two versions of goggles, early and late. You will need to check the lens serial number. It is a fantastic lens and gives beautiful images, not to shabby in the close focus range either. Merry Christmas to you and your Kin.

I agree erik..
i've put a no no on that part of the shop where that particular DR resides...... will focus my attention on the store's lady assistant instead.

It sounds like that lens is priced for the collectors of mint gear.

I got mine off ebay in a bubble from Hong Kong for £200 [about US $400] about six months ago. WITHOUT GOGGLES.
Glass is perfect. 100%. Cosmetically it's mint minus.
Just to give you an idea.

I had mine off ebay for £175, roughly $360 WITH eyes, and except being a bit dirty on the outsite, near mint condition
