Want to buy a leather covering for my zorki 1 and wondering if it is as simple as gluing it. I really dont want to do this. It looks really messy. Anybody have any insight?
I bought stuff from Aki Asahi before. Actually quiet a few times. I bought their camera covering for my Pentax Mx, Lomo LC-A, and Polaroid 690 (the funky japaneseque gold one!). You do not actually "glue" those onto the camera. They come in a wax paper backing and those coverings work like stickers. I never bought from them from their ebay though; I always buy it from their website at http://www.aki-asahi.com/ .
Hi,
I have used several kits from Aki. In fact if you look at the bulletin board on his website, (http://www.aki-asahi.com/store/) 2 of my Pentax's are there. I haven't found any need to use extra glue in applying the cover. However, have a look at his website and there is a section about removing the old vucanite. This would be messy and I certainly would not do it the way he suggests. I am about to do a similiar job to another FSU camera. I intend to dismantle it so there is no chance of geting anything near the mech, stripping it and then paint the surround before applying the cover and putting it all back together.
I don't know if anyelse on the forum has a goo way to remove the old covering.
Regards
Kim

On a camera that has real leather you can pull off it might be clean but on a zorki that has "painted" leather it gets a bit more complicated. I was just wondering what would happened if I just stuck the leather on over the paint.
The "painted" leather is pretty thick plasticy stuff. It has to come off. I used paint remover on my FED 2. I was a little messy but worth it. Really worth it! The Red FED has one of Aki's coverings. Recommended!
I've literally just finished putting a new covering from Aki on my Kiev 2a - it took about 20 minutes in total and couldn't have been easier. I'd say go for it!
I bought protecting covering from Aki Asahi, and it never ever ever arrived. He promised refund. Refund never ever materialized. He may have happy customers, but he lost my business forever, and my recommendation forever.
sort of like gabrielma, I'm a bit skeptical about Aki Asahi.. I was planning to buy a Kiev kit from him and sent him an email asking about color options.. I never got a reply
I bought a red kit from Aki some time ago when I noticed the original black leatherette (?) of my M2 started breaking. When I left the camera in my conservatory for just too long (gets very warm) it almost completely fell off by itself.
Now the camera is naked and waits for my buying of cleaning alcohol. Then the mounting. Should be not too difficult.
I even got a free black skin to try!
