Comment on Fomapan/Arista EDU

I like using Foma/EDU 100 a lot in 120. It's fast becoming my main film. I liked it so much I picked up a couple cans in 35mm. Currently duking it out with AP100 for my favorite film.

I develop primarily in Diafine and get wonderful negatives. One comment about the roll itself is the end tape gets caught in some of my cameras. My Yashica 124 tends to get the end tape caught, I just have to remember not to wind too hard or risk breaking it.

i've been shooting the edu/foma in 4x5 and it's ok, looks pretty good when it's exposed right. but, boy, i switched back to HP5 for a little while and now it's all i can do to finish the box of edu so i can go back the HP5. night and day, the HP5 is so much more alive and versatile. i do like the 6 min processing time in xtol 1:1 though, waaay better than the 12 minutes for HP5.

How is their Edu film? The cheap stuff.

I bought a bunch and after three rolls broke while rewinding the cassettes I have not loaded another roll. 😡 I was just shooting them for test purposes, but wound up pitching all three. I've not decided what to do with the balance of the stock.

Personally, I can't stand the Edu stuff. The Premium is great though.

The Edu range are beautiful films if exposed anbd developed properly (which is usually where people go wrong). I do mean beautiful in that they have real character as well as producing great classic B&W images. The 100 produces very APX like results and the 200, (really only about Ei 100) produces a uniquely gllowing sort of tonality. My gripe is that the 200 (and I have used 120 and 35mm) tends to have emulsion defects like tiny little flecks. They can easily be spotted out on prints where they show (dark smooth areas) but its a pain in the proverbial.

The 400 premium IS TriX as far as I can tell and tyhe 400 Legacy is Neopan 400.

I developed my first roll of Arista Premium Plus-X 100 last Sunday. Box speed. Box developing: Xtol 1:3, 7 minutes in a Jobo tank on a Uniroller motor base. I scanned the negatives Sunday night. Lovely film.

It looks like some Edu 400 in 120 is going on my next Freestyle order. I haven't printed larger than 11X14 in years so grain shouldn't be a problem. Thanks!
