Question about DAG

Don has done many many repairs for me. Every time the camera and lens came back better than when I sent it. Most recently he CLA’d a Nikon S2. Smoothest working rangefinder I’ve ever owned.

That’s the cleanest S2 I’ve ever seen!

It’s been about eight years, but I sent Don my broken-shutter Minox IIIs and he had it back to me in about 10 or 11 days, working perfectly. Regarding repair time, I think a lot depends on the camera and nature of the repair, plus current workload.

For our old film cameras, these repair people are few in number - I appreciate them.

Question about DAG

I have some haze and possible fungus on my collapsible Summicron 50. Can DAG or others clean it? Is it worth it? Basically there is a large hazy circle in the middle of my photos when I take images with this lens on my M3.

Thanks! After about 3 weeks it appears that the eyepiece was not tightened and has fallen out making the camera unusable. I have emailed Don with what happened and hope he has another one.. I will not be recommending dag to anyone sad to say..

Those are easy to unscrew and lose, I wouldn't be too quick to blame that on DAG.

If the haze is cleanable, pretty much any lens tech can do it. Not all haze is completely removable, however.

I sent DAG an item last week, he emailed me the same day he got it, asking for a quick reminder of what needed to be done, and it was completed the same day. Simple job tho.

Yes he has lots of unique Leitz tools, that no one else has, either. But not necessary for a haze clean.

Yes and yes. Youxin completely stripped and cleaned my collapsible 'cron while I was at his house a few years back - at reasonable cost. Give him a try.

After about 8 months I just received an m6 back...

The camera itself feels good but the Leitz logo is gone and has been replaced with a bit of half stuck on leather. I think the top plate is different but it has the same serial number.

Maybe two pieces?

Have sent an email but it’s a bit concerning to say the least

You'll have to call most likely. When my eye piece for my M2 fell I emailed him and he actually responded but then forgot to send the piece out so after almost a month of waiting I called him and then he sent it.

He's probably run out of red "Leitz" and "Leica" dots, which is not at all surprising considering Leica now only uses that same size on the M10-R (not a high-production camera).

The M6 hot shoe and topcover are two separate parts, but you can be confident he returned your property to you.

Unfortunately that’s not what happened at all.

The m6 I sent in had a damaged eye piece, a Leitz logo no zinc oxidisation on the top plate and no strap lug damage

The one I received back had a top plate with no damaged eye piece, a piece of leatherette over the hole where there should be a Leitz logo, plenty of zinc oxidisation and putty over a cracked strap lug protector (the shroud above the strap lug)

This top plate has definitely been inadvertently assembled with my camera. Who knows where my original is now

Have sent it back to him via DHL but he’s confused as to how it could have happened.

I’m not a repairer but maybe he’s so busy working on multiple cameras something for mixed up.

That is terrible, to say he needs more help is a understatement. My experience with his business was very.. not good. I will not be recommending him to anyone. I hope you get it sorted out with him. The issues I've had with him were terrible especially after 7 months of waiting but did get resolved. With that being said I'm sure he will fix you up with some sort of solution.

Over the years I've had mixed experiences with all the Big 3. Mostly good but some bad. They're popular because they have generally done good work over a long period of time. The popularity, however, has created backlogs, especially this year and especially DAG who has been popular for decades. My suggestion now is to look for others. Fixing a Leica film camera doesn't require a magic wand, in general. The Big 3 may have spare part availability others lack, so repair specific suggestion. Waiting 9 months to a year or more is the norm now for these cats. But fortunately others can do most repairs.

Don't think I've ever had an issue with DAG, I have had issues with others. Just got my M4 back from a CLA and prism repair, mailed 6/14 back today 8/19. Just over two months including shipping. My M7 last year came back in less than a month. I've never waited more than 6 months that I can remember. Guess he likes me -🙂.

Remember that there are other folks out there who do good work and can handle Leica stuff. Pro Camera in VA has done some wonderful work for me recently on a variety of different cameras and lenses.

I've never used Pro Camera but I've heard nothing but good about them for quite a few years. Both for Leica and Rolleiflex.

Honestly getting a bit frustrated at this point but there’s not a lot I can do.

Sent the m6 back at my cost. Tried to confirm over email it had actually arrived (I’ve had DHL deliver to the wrong house before). No response.

oh dear, Sounds like You don't have very Good Luck in general...
In the past 'DHL' delivered a package to the wrong house, hopefully you did not put an incorrect address

Agree. He did a CLA for my 35mm Summilux and added a new focus tab, but was unable to anything for the haze. Sometimes haze is permanent.

That haze was what convinced me to let go of my Summilux since the haze was reducing the contrast to an already soft lens. A shame really.
