I have a roll of Ilford Pan F Plus loaded into my camera, and I have never used it before. It is the slowest film I've ever tried as well. I was wondering what the member's experiences with it is like, and if you have any examples, a picture or two would be greatly appreciated. I'll have it processed at a local professional lab, for the first roll or two. I have suddenly become picky about what to photograph, mostly because I don't want to waste a shot in low light, and I haven't gotten out so far in brighter light to give it a try. I imagine it would go well in some of my SFU cameras, which are straining to get to 1/500th of a second...

Thank you to all who reply.

With best regards,

Pfreddee(Stephen)

Dear Stephen,

Without wishing to be unduly discouraging, this is about the last film I'd entrust to anyone else, even a 'pro' lab. It's a short-toe film, which means it's extremely sensitive to both exposure and development. You can control the former easily enough, but unless you develop yourself, you can't control the latter. Go to http://www.rogerandfrances.com/subscription/choosing bw films.html and scroll about a third of the way down for a Pan F shot (Brighton Pavilion). You'll also find the following quote: Slow films are often derided as inherently contrasty, but this simply isn't so. Like any other film, the contrast is controlled by development, but the shape of the characteristic curve is such that they are more sensitive to development time than many faster films, so that contrast builds rapidly with over-development.

Cheers,

R.

I love this film and have had great results with it, developing it myself in Sprint Standard, D76, Rollei developers, Neofin Blue, and Kodak Xtol.

I've shot both 135 and 120 formats and am currently working through a bulk of 100 feet of it in my Leica M3 and Nikon F5. Totally awesome film.

I've had good luck with Pan F+ shot in bright sunshine, and developed in HC-110. My first couple of rolls had a purplish cast to the negatives. A five minute pre-rinse seems to solve this problem.
