question about the M2 bottom plate

hi all you experts...

got this beatup M2 that comes with two plates. one fits in the camera with the original film spool and the other comes in a separate plastic bag. the obviously look different. i compared the one int he plastic bag that looks just like my M6 plate. The other looks different, of course. i attached some photos here so if any one of you can tell me more about those plates and hwo i should be using them.

The one with the 3-spoked thing on it is a rapid load type baseplate. The other is the original used with the pullout spool.

A rapid load spool, the "tulip" type you see in M4's and later bodies. These are as rare as hen's teeth. I'd just use the normal spool. You could sell the baseplate on to someone who wants a spare.

I've not seen a triangular device for a M2 (or M3) do they exist?

I use a Leitz rapid load adopter (circa '72) which comes as two parts

- A replacement spool
- And a device to screw to the baseplate to push the film leader into the replacement spool

This makes the M2 as easy to load as most Jap... SLRs. I'd have baseplate and cassette in puddles without the rapid loader. It seems easier than the M4 and later three prong (fixed) take up spools.

A spare baseplate must be worth 'real' money to some people.

Hi-- I had the Quick Load kit installed in my M2... might have been 1972 or more likely earlier if the kit was available earlier. The M2 was made in 1958 and I bought it in 1967 (for $150, how times change). I got the kit as soon as I learned it was available. Some users don't like it, but I do. FWIW, neither of wtl's pictured baseplates show the Quick Load kit adaptation. One looks like a stock M2/M3 baseplate, and the other is from a later model.

I shot a few rolls of film with the M2, with the original plate. I am not sure what the big deal is about loading film but it seems to be as easy as 123. Maybe I am missing something without a true comparison to the quick load?
