i know there are a lot of topics about fsu lens and bessa r but i have one more question - what are the limits for using j8 or j3 on bessa r wide open. i mean if you dont adjust lens for bessa. how close can you go and still have good focus?

I use the J-8 and J-3 on my R, and I can't say that I've ever noticed a problem. Lot's of people here have had the same experience, others have had to adjust their lenses.
I think in a lot of cases the looser tolerances of Soviet manufacturing may cover the error. Assuming that everything is exactly to specification, the error should be about 2.5cm at 1 meter, but again there's enough variance in the way these were made that it could be more or less.

f/2.8 or, at worst, f/4 should cover any problems on a 50mm lens.

I have used a J3 wide open, focused as close as 8 to 10 feet, no shimming, just like it came from the dear old Soviet Union via the auction site. The results are sharp and entirely satisfactory to me. Dave
