Question on CoolScan 5000 ED

Hi,

I've been using this scanner for over a year now. I really love it! But I was wondering if any software could allow me to do bracketing while scanning? Like -0.5, 0, 0.5 with the analog gain without having to set it manually each time?

Not that I know of. I've used Nikon Scan and Viewscan extensively, and played with Silverfast. I know Nikon Scan and Viewscan don't do what you want and I'm pretty certain that Silverfast doesn't either...and there's no other scan software I know of that supports the scanner.

Doh, that's kinda sad... O well, I'll get over it ! BTW, I checked your website. Nice work ! I enjoyed the Zipper pictures. That was my favorite attraction back in the days... I'm wearing the same russian coat...

I should have rode the zipper, but I was too busy taking pictures of it...lol I love my russian coat, it is WARM. I'm back in Indiana and it is already freezing here. I can be out in the cold for hours in that coat!

I have the same scanner but I do not know any software making bracketing. I join angeloks saying nice work on your website chris, bravo!

I don't know about bracketing but I think the Ai version of Silverfast does multi-pass scanning. Not quite the same as bracketing but it may give you a little more shadow detail.

nikon Scan and Viewscan do that too, and in my experience with my LS-8000ED, its not worth the EXTREME long scan times it requires. There's virtually no improvement with most slides and none at all with negative (negs have lower dynamic range than slides, which have such dark areas that it strains the scanners own dynamic range, producing noise in dark areas)

Vuescan will do a multi sample and also a Multi exposure
The multi-exposure is explained as follows:
Multi exposure This option provides a way to get additional detail from the darker parts of the scanned image. It is available on scanners that are able to increase the CCD exposure time.
A first pass is performed as usual with the normal RGB exposure. This will be an appropriate exposure for the image as a whole. Then a second pass is performed with a longer exposure, which can reveal additional detail in dark areas not captured in the first pass. VueScan then merges the results of the two by choosing from either the first or second exposure pass.

This works better for me as it brings out more detail in the shadows. I actually use both for most of my slides, especially if they are under exposed. The multi sample gives a cleaner scan.
The LS-5000 is capable of both
