question on nikon lens - resale value

I have no need for Nikon lens, but the promos with the current D5100 and other mid-level bodies make it tempting to get a kit, and sell the lens on the auction site or a forum.

Anyone have an idea on what the resale value of a plasticky nikon slr zoom might be worth selling? Note that this list is from amzn, but I think bh and adorama and others have the same deal going. Most are DX, but one or two are fx/dx:

I looked at the For Sale forum of the Nikon Cafe, and if the discounts you mention are $s off the list price then they are pretty close to, maybe just a bit higher than, the used prices. If the discounts are in ADDITION to the store discount, then you would stand to make $100 or so selling the lenses in a 1 to 1 sale. Of course with ebay you'd take your chances. These being current, but not very hot items, you might not make much there.

That 18-200 is a decent travel lens (one lens does all motif). I wish they had the 85/1.4 G on sale!

Thanks, these prices are off the discounted amazon prices, which are discounted and competitive with many places, but slightly higher than ebay sellers. Seems kind of risky as this promo is putting a glut of nikon lenses out there.

For travel, I've done great with the 18-70 af-s and 35/1.8 prime. The 18-200 covers a wide fl, but is too slow for indoors or night shots, so I'd still want a fast prime.

70-300 FF capable one is interesting in that if the prices drop way down, might be worth just keeping and using with a future used D700 or something. But that is kind of a slow lens too.

This list is all slow lenses. If you want fast you have to open up the wallet 🙂

Not a DX user but that 70-300 VR does very well on my D700. It is really a good lens for the money.

Second the 70-300 VR. Great performer by my experience and by reviewers. Compact enough and inexpensive enough. Keeps you in the FF game... rumors say 24 to 32 Mpix for the D700 and D3 replacements.

Then you can add whatever fast primes you want (oooh, like the 105 f2 DC!). Like Leica, you always have resale value for you good glass with a solid brand like Nikon or Canon.

Thanks, but I have those lengths already in both DX and FF, and faster. I can't imagine using a lens that slow, even with VR.

I read the nikon rumors too, and one is that at the expense of the higher resolution the successor to the D700 may have, may result in worse high iso capabilities of the existing D700. Just a rumor.

I really don't need a D5100 yet, we'll see if they go down a couple/few hundred later in the year, maybe good deals on refurbs. I'm also disappointed that the D5100 has no live histogram (wtf!?) and the D3100 has no EV bracketing.

I have faster lenses also but for saving weight and bulk while traveling the 70-300 does well for me. OTH it really depends on what/how you shoot. If the supposed new replacement for the D700 performs anything like the D3X then it is almost a foregone conclusion that you will loose some high ISO performance. I have read several people saying that they consider the D3X is limited to a usable high ISO of 800 to 1600.
