These two little books about Leicas are very useful, as is the third book; get the latest edition you can find.

Online you can get a lot from the serial number here:-

It's in French but obvious how to use it. Here's a clue "Objectif" is the same as "Objective" and "Boîte" means body. The answer after you put in the serial number is pretty obvious.
There's also a very useful list and detailed list of serial numbers and bodies at the back of Rigliatti's book "Leica the first 70 years".

Thank you. The website you gave me just confirms what every other source says, there is no record of an 89077, and 189077 is a 1933 Elmar. I already have a pair of recommended reference books on order. I will look into your recommendation also.

I would post the information and photo's on the Leica Forum, Collectors & Historica area ( https://www.l-camera-forum.com/forum/35-leica-collectors-historica/ ). They have many very knowledgeable members that specialize in the early Leica cameras and lenses.
I have just posted there. Thanks.

Johngwill. Your recommendation to ask in the Leica Forum turned out to be a winner. While there were several possibilities brought up there, eventually a final answer was provided. Thank you.
"Elmar 5 cm. with serial number 89077 was shipped on November 15, 1945. an Army Exchange Service T.S.F.E.T. / Main Auftrag 13388.
Using a previously unused serial number."

Happy to help. Who could have guessed the final answer. Early Leica is certainly an unpredictable era.
