question re. megaperls mag for rd1

i recently bought a used mag for my rd1, planning to use it along with my 50 sonnar lens.

i can't seem to get it quite clear. there is a built in diopter with a ring that turns to dial it in for one's eyes.
when trying to dial it in with my glasses on i can't get it absolutely clear.
the glass is clean as are my glasses. i can make it worse and better but not absolutely clear.

is there a trick to this?

I've never had a problem seeing through my magnifier, but I've also never had to use the diopter adjustment. I would shoot Dirk, the owner of Japan Exposures (formerly Megapearls), an email (dirk(at)japanexposures.com).

that diopter is a godsend to me! then again, i wear contacts, need reading glasses (but refuse to wear them when shooting my camera), and probably should have another visit to get my eyes checked.... perhaps your glasses are spot on and you don't need the diopter at all?

your situation reminds me more of what happened to me with the Leica version, though. i could make it better or worse, but never absolutely clear when using it on the M2 and i was very close to tears. ended up not using it all.... when i put it on the M8, however, i was able to dial it in perfectly. i think i read somewhere the the VF in the M8 already uses a diopter of some sort and i guess my eyes need to be corrected more than the diopter was able to give me. the additional .5 (plus or minus) was exactly what i needed.

on both mags, i twist the diopter almost all the way off :eek:

so either your glasses are perfect or you need to get a new prescription is my guess.

I've got the same unit and have not had a problem, but I use it flipping my glasses up and dialing in the correction i need for my naked eye. haven't used it in a while because i screwed in a diopter so tight, i haven't been able to unscrew it w. finger pressure alone.

If useful, I could try to find it and try it with glasses.

IF the diopter adjustment ring is turned fully counter-clockwise the resulting diopter is quite positive, and without the unit on a camera you should be able to see an object quite close. Turning clockwise makes it less positive towards zero, then negative. Without the unit on a camera, you should be able to see clearly at normal photographic distances at some point of adjustment unles your eyes are quite extreme. What is your optical prescription?
 
I have just had a better look at mine, and it seems that the maximum negative setting is something like -1.5 or maybe -2.0. It is supposed to go to -3.0. If your optical prescription is strongly negative, maybe the range is inadequate.

Incidentally, I need to adjust the diopter when going from distant subjects to closer ones. This doesn't seem to be an issue, at least to such a degree, with the x1.15 Mag for Leica, also from Megaperls. Maybe it's the magnification, more magnification leading to less depth of field for viewing.

If you're young, none of this will matter to you.
 
while you're playing, you may find that the dioptre ring turns too easily = requires frequent adjustment. i found a rubber O ring which fits between the ring and magnifier body. it "stiffens" up the ring but still allows adjustment. :)

Joe,

look at this thread (last two posts) on LUF. seems that some couldn't use the mag successfully with their glasses....
