I just received my Zorki 5 from Fedka and am anxious to take it out for some test shooting.

I have a question in regards to the rewind knob once the film is loaded...

Does the rewind knob rotate as you advance the film? Does it rotate freely when the film is loaded? I'm looking for an indications that tell me I loaded the film correctly and that it is advancing.

Thanks in advance!

The best option is to take up the slack in the cassette, by gently clockwise rotation of the knob, before winding the blank two frames - that way you confirm, when the rewind knob rotates counterclockwise that the film is being transported.
The 5 will make noises like a T-34 tank when you wind as well - ignore.

I cleaned, lubed and adjusted the winding gears on mine, now it's silky smooth and quiet, apart from the slight feel and sound of the winder ratchet. Wasn't hard to do either 🙂

Well, it looks like the film was loaded correctly. My issue was too much slack, and when I first was taking up the slack, I was turning the knob the wrong way and creating more slack. (It'll teach me to not to be playing around with a camera I'm unfamiliar with past my bedtime.)

@wolves3012: I'll keep that in mind. Seems pretty smooth to me now.

@lubitel: Thanks. If the photos come out half as good as the camera looks, I'll be happy.

On a different note, but still about Zorki-5: Never, never, never wind or fire the shutter WITHOUT a lens on the camera. Without a lens in place, the rf arm will swing outwards and consequently, the part which it's connected to inside the RF housing can move out of place and mesh with the shutter speed dial's parts. This is a design defect which was resolved in the Zorki-6.

This is a very real danger. I've just finished repairing one Z-5 whose parts got meshed up when its owner was firing and winding its shutter with the lens removed. He was looking at the condition of the shutter. If this must be done,
the rf sensor tip must be pushed inwards a bit during winding and firing.

Thank you, Jay! I did a complete read up on the Zorki's on your website (and printed the info) before ordering the camera. Great and useful info there.

Hello Comrade Jay,

Have tried a Z-5 Type B? I think the factory corrected this defect on type B. What do you think? Maybe some type B still has this problem?

Cheers,

Zhang

Zhang,

I have a type B that I've had the top off, it would be prone to the same problem....

Hi Comrade Zhang

As wolves said, the layout in the later Z-5 remained the same, and the risk still remains.

I've wound and fired the shutter of my Z-5 without lens on several occasions without really getting the parts tangle. Perhaps doing this once or twice wouldn't harm the camera. Or maybe doing this repeatedly would cause the parts to tangle sooner or later.
