I just heard about the Shutter mechanism of Nikon F2.

When I set the shutter dial between a normal positon, F2 can provide mid-shutter speed. (for example, between 1/125-1/250) so users are able to take pictures by using any shutter speed that he or she wants. Is it correct?

And, how about Nikon rangefinders? I know that SP and S3 and F series are having many similarities
when it comes to some parts and mechanism.

Sorry for my awkward English~😀

Thanks in advance !!

Hi Park,

Yes, just like the F2, on the S3 2000, S3 2002, and SP 2005 you CAN set the shutter speed dial to intermediate speeds. The manual says its ok. Not sure if the same applies to the vintage versions, though.

Park, I just found this in the archives. It was posted by VinceC some time back! This is from the S3 2000 manual, but the same applies for the SP 2005.

Here's the Japanese version, if you feel like doing some Japanese language study 😉

Thank you Jon, : ) a Japanese version manual makes me feel like studing, but first of all, I should conquer an English!

By the way, the manual says, accurate imtermediate speed may not be odtained, what does it mean? is it meaning a mechanical matter or just
means users hard to know which intermediate speed they set?

Hi Park,

Here's a quick translation of what the Japanese says: You can set the shutter speed dial in between click stops, but the shutter speed achieved might not be the exact in between shutter speed.

Does that help?

Did you try this at all shutter speeds? At the high-end, the movement of the second curtain might be much more sensitive if the mechanism was not designed to be accurate at intermediate settings.

I'm not sure you need to be too accurage with shutter speeds. The mechanical tolerance for shutter speeds has typically been about +/- one-third of a stop. Color slide film has a tolerance of about a quarter stop. Negative film has a tolerance of at least a stop.

I tried it inbetween all shutter speeds from 1/30 to 1/1000. The speeds might not be 100% spot on, but they are accurate enough for metering with slide film. Works great actually!

I purposely avoided trying this inbetween shutter speeds where the slow governor comes into play (1, 1/2, 1/4).
