Hello all,

I took the plunge and purchased a Coolscan V. I received it this morning and I'm like a kid with a new toy. There is something weird though.

1. First the USB plug at the rear of the unit moves quite a lot - well for a USB plug... nothing like I have seen before - it's almost like it has unsoldered or broken from the main board. Is it the same for you?

2. When I power up the scanner it goes through all its blinking LED stages and finally I get a LED that's on, but if I tilt the scanner just a tiny bit it goes through the whole init stage again. At first I though it was the USB connection that was lost because of the flimsy plug but no, it looks more like the scanner can detect the slightest change in position, and if that happens it resets itself like a mindless zombie. Does your Coolscan do the same? Kinda annoying because I work on an antique desk and it's not really flat so if the scanner reinits everytime I sneeze that's not practical.

Thanks a lot in advance for your thoughts.

I don't have the Coolscan V, but do have the Super Coolscan 900 ED. My scanner is very stable, but does require a couple of minutes to boot when it's first turned on.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

Thanks a lot for your help folks.

Erik may I ask you something? When your scanner is stable - green led is on - could you please tilt it a tiny bit to see what happens? I'd like to know if it resets like mine... Thanks a million!

1. The usb on my V moves a bit also - never noticed it before and has not caused a problem (yet).

2. No such behaviour on mine. Takes about 30 secs for the light to stop flashing (this with film adaptor fitted).

Edit - I should point out I just tested it tilting etc..

Thanks again for all the replies. I love RFF!

I switched it off for 10 minutes, then switched it back on. I did the wiggling thing with both the USB and power plugs. Still stays on. And now when I tilt it it does nothing, it stays on I mean. This unit seems inconsistent in its inconsistencies... I'll use it for a few days and then see what happens.

I am sober btw, and I was an electrical engineer in another life so I guess I cannot have plugged the mains the wrong way!

Thanks again and sorry to have wasted your time, I'll get back with more news if more trouble arise.
