I have a CL coming in the mail, and an ltm 35mm lens I'd like to use on it until I find the right prime (some kind of 40 f2 at the right price) in M mount.

I see the various adapters for ltm to M mount, but apparently they bring up different framelines in different cameras. Is there a generic one that does nothing to bring up anything that would work on a CL and hopefully later an M4 of M6?

Also, why are these so obscure at least in the US? It seems like very few can be found in the US, B&H has a single used one, but I have no idea if it will work on the CL with an ltm 35mm lens.

Is this just a bad idea? I can wait for a proper M lens if the above idea isn't a good one. Besides, the camera's meter doesn't work, so the photos won't come out right anyways 😛

There's a Rokkor 40/2 lens on offer at the Pnet Leica Forum.

Just checked the ad to make sure I had the right forum. It seems like a very good deal-the price includes shipping.

questions on m39 to m adapters on CL

AMPGUY...As I understand it, the Leica CL brightline finder brings up the 40, 50 or 90mm frame whenever you use bayonet-mount Leica lenses...And whenever you use the 50mm or 90mm Leica sm to bm adapter, you also get the correct frame lines with Leica lenses... Leica made a 35mm adapter, too, but no a 40mm one...

If you use other make sm to bm adapters, I don't believe you get the correct frames...These adapters, Leica and others, are not so difficult to find in new condition and may be available quite often in used condition...Cameraquest [Stephen Gandy] probably has Voigtlander ones...DAG [Don Goldberg] in Oregon, Wisconsin and/or Sherry Krauter in Campbell Hall, N.Y. might also have Leica ones or know who might have some... Microtools might also have some...You should also get replies here from sellers...

Thanks Victor

Thanks Victor

That lens was filed to bring up 50 lines vs the default 35 lines on the bigger M's, do you know how the filing effects the CL?

I'll also contact Mark to see if he knows. Thanks.

Ted, it's the other way around. The default framelines that the 40 CL lens brings up in M cameras is 50mm. It can be modified by filing to bring up the 35 framelines. That lens on Pnet for $250 shipped is a very good deal. It is the CLE version too I believe.

just got an answer

just got an answer

OK, the 40 lines are always there, the 50 and 90 lines only come up when a lens indicates it is a 50 or 90. A 40mm filed down to bring up 50 lines will now activate the default 40 lines AND the 50 lines.

I would not recommend filing your lenses. Sell them and buy the right ones to activate the lines your camera needs.

Hi Frank

Hi Frank

You sure about this? I mean no one could be more sure than you 😀 , but I just got off the phone with Stephen Gandy and he's pretty sure his pages are correct. If 50 is the default with 40mm lens, why are 40 lines even built into the CL?

The statement in yellow is incorrect to the best of my knowledge. Can anyone else corroborate or refute this.

Ok, a bit of confusion here.

With no lens mounted the 40 & 50 lines are visible. When _any_ lens other than a 90 is mounted, the 40 & 50 lines are visible. If a 90 is mounted, then the 40 & 90 lines are visible.

Normally the 40 pulls up the 50 frame line on all other M cameras. If you slightly modify the mount with a file, it will pull up the 35 frame line instead. This modification will have no impact on it's use on a CL.

Hope this helps,

William

Thanks!!

Thanks!!

Appreciate the clarification very much William and Frank.

Did anyone ever ask Leica why bring up 50 framelines along with 40 lines, if only a 40 is mounted? Why leave the 50 on perpetually unless a 90 is mounted??

Sheet, I'm sure not getting in line for an M8 with this kind of logic.

So to clarify wrt ltm/m mounts and the CL, any adapter that is non-90 specific should be fine with a 35mm ltm lens, and the CL, e.g. bringing up both the 40mm and 50mm lines, correct??

Thanks.

I suspect it is simplicity. It was a "budget" camera. If the 40 is always there, you just need a simple mech to change the 50 for 90 when the longer lens is fitted. Otherwise you would have 3 settings instead of 2.

That's correct. I use a 50 adaptor on my Canon 135/3.5 since I have to use an external VF anyway 🙂 Just put any non-90/28 adaptor on and you'll be fine with your 35mm LTM lens.

BTW, Kim beat me to answering your question and said what I would have.
