Got a 35 F2 'cron on *bay serial number 3061865. Price currently £450.

Questions

What version is this - says made in Canada

Is £450 a good price - condition described as perfect. (BIN price £550)

Quick response appreciated as there is on 45 minutes left

IT's most likely the 40mm 'cron...I don't know of a Canadian 35...then again, I could be wrong.

There are indeed Canadian 4th 35 'cron. I think there are more Canadian 4th than German 4th.

Any of the 35mm summicrons are good. I've owned 1st and the last non asph and have a friend with a 2nd. They all ar fine and this sounds like a good deal.

BTW versions 2,3 and 4 were all Canadian. Version 4 finished out its run in Germany though, after the 1988 move to Solms and the consolidation of production from Midland. In typical myth-nonsense the German version, optically identical, sells for more. Likewise, since the advent of the internet forums, the 4th generation has become something of a legend, elevated to cult status above its predecessors as well as being hotly contested against the ASPH version in two internet-spawned camps. I have the 3rd version, it makes beautiful enough pictures that I would not think of changing to another version. Plus, it's screwed together not glued together (this info from Sherry).

No myth, the 4th and current asph 35 Summicron lenses front module thing is glued on. I too spoke to Sherry about this, she is quite outspoken on the issue.

It is a known issue. Unless really serious it will not effect performance of the lens, and is pretty cheap to fix, Sherry did mine for $35.

Unfortunately the only fix is to reglue the thing. It is best to be very careful when putting on and taking off filters or hoods. A tell tale sign is that the aperture ring will not point to an engraved number when clicked into place. The clicks will be correct, but the glue is shot and the ring is twisted.

No body makes 'um like they used to, not even Leica.

And what myth might that be? I thought it is an accepted fact that they are the same optically.

Ben Z is right on the money.

I have never experienced a problem with my 4th, although I have heard of some due to the glueing; HOWEVER, this is not an issue unless you make a habit of grabbing the lens either by the hood or front to twist it off the camera mount. Which you likely don't do anyway.

Don't worry about it. It's a fantastic lens that weighs only as much as a large bag of marshmellows!

You found one at a very good price.
