Quick ? on OM cameras.

I love my OM's - I have the 3 and 4Ti, the 4 was my main camera since I got it new about 22 years ago - then it started jamming and not charging the shutter. now it's been to the same repair place 4 times, and I've spent USD $450 to fix it - the guy seems unable to keep it from jamming even through the first roll after the repair. the last time they kept it for a week to test it. I
now am faced with trying to have them keep fixing it for free, or sending it in to Olympus and spending more. I wish I could just buy a new one, it is a jewel and I have 5 lenses. on the bright side I have been using my neglected OM-3 for a while and it is just as good 🙂
 
Trius, Whenever I visit my daughter in the Lexington KY area, I make the rounds of the thrift shops. I found the Tower 19 aka Ace E with leather bag, flash and instructions. The asking price was $35, when I pointed out the flash was missing the pc connector they reduced it to $20. Works perfectly though the selenium meter works some times. Must be a loose connection. When it works it matches my Weston Master V. Have some cheap Fuji film from Walmart in it at present, but have some HP5 to run through it. Found a Durst M601 with the CLS 66 color head for $15, So I plan to start doing my own developing and enlarging.

Unlike Leica, OM cameras are too plentiful and cheap to be prized by real collectors, so what's left to do with ours? Nothing but to use them!

And we get big smiles every time we pull the negs out of the tank (or from the lab).

That, is why we love ze OM system. 😉

What was the Quick ? again...
 
Pick any f2, they are all jewels: 21, 24, 28, 35, 40, 50, 85, 90, 100, 180.

On day, I'll get more, interested in the 21 and 100 in particular ... for the moment I have to survive with 28, 35 and 85 only (and the other "basic" Zuikos 🙂 ).

Then quit blathering and babbling and show us some pictures! If I ever stumble over the 21/2 at a reasonable price, I will become an OM user.

The one reason that I did not switch from Nikon to Olympus a few decades ago was because Olympus did not have a 35/1.4. The 35mm has been my main working focal length for many years.

One of the things that has made me neglect my rangefinders somewhat of late is the extrordinary 50mm f1.2 Zuiko. I'm highly addicted to fast 50mm glass and love what can be done with it ... in fact I'd be a definite candidate for a Noctilux in a perfect financial world!

I'd been shooting my 1.2 Canon on my Ikon and saw some things I didn't like and decided to put in some serious miles with the Zuiko equivalent out of interest. Well it's no competition in my opinion ... aside from a little barrel distortion the Zuiko whops the Canon's butt in all departments. There is also the issue of actually being able to see the depth of field you are working with at f1.2 instead of imagining it as you have to do with a rangefinder.

Then of course I decided to make a direct comparison between my 90mm early Summicron and the 85mm f2 Zuiko ....... !

Here is something that will make all you OM worshippers weep...

Zuiko 85mm f1.4

I met a fellow long-time Nikon user, in fact, he was even on the Nikon field-test list, the other day in the city. I have not seen him in a few months and as we were chatting, I noticed he was using an OM-series. Since we last shot together, he has dumped all of his Nikon gear and is using the OM system exclusively. Other missing his Nikkor 85/1.4, he has not looked back...
 
..... OK, you asked for it!

I'd taken a series of face portraits of the students I was photgraphing at the local uni and did a follow up identical series two weeks later shot in the same spot in the same light. In the first series I used the Summicron and Ikon and switched to the 85mm Zuiko and my OM-2 for the second set. If I said the Zuiko whopped the Summicron's butt I'd be lying slightly but for me it had the edge ... I liked the look of the second photos better and actually found my focusing a little more consistent with the SLR lens!

Do we love our Olympus gear ..."YES WE DO!"

(sorry ... got a little carried away there!) 😛

OK, I am setting up eBay searches for 50/1.2 and the 85. The 50 will cost dearly unless I am truly fortunate. And my 100/2.8 is certianly wonderful, not to mention a great bargain.

But having had a 90 Cron in the past, Keith's assesment puts me over the edge for the 85. The M budget gets shot if I do this, you know.
