"Quickie" Rear Lens Cap for Jupiter 12

Sometimes you get what you pay for and that's all. I wanted a Jupiter 12 to use with my VG condition Kiev 4AM. I found a "beater" 4A on eBay with said lens attached. The body was clearly in rough shape such that the gamble was whether it was at least a decent lens cover for the Jupiter.

Lo and behold, the camera w/lens comes and all is as expected. The body is m/l a POS. Fortunately, the lens is clean and scratch free so I got the benefit of my bargain.

I fitted a 40.5 UV filter on it, both to protect the front glass and make a easier to grasp arpeture ring. I had a 40.5 front lens cap laying around too.

But no rear cap - except that "wasted" 4M body!

Guess what? I just found out that the plastic cap of a Kodak film "can" snaps over the rear lens of the Jupiter 12! It's a pretty tight fit and will definitely protect the glass while the lens is not in use.

Pretty cool!

If you cannot "recycle" the next best thing is to "reuse"! 😀

And you can use the top of the film can as a rear element cover on the J8m in Kiev mount. Talk about recylcing!

What do you mean by "Kodak film "can" ? I'm assuming the old-style metal canisters? I just carefully tried the lid from a TMAX100 & it definitely wouldn't fit. There's a 2nd rim inside that has a smaller diameter than the rear element on my contax/keiv J-12...

No, by "can" I meant the plastic caps. What do you call a plastic "can"? Couldn't think of it! 😀

Nope, I never said that, did I?

I had the friggin' cap from a Kodak film cannister holder sitting on the desk. I'm holding the friggin' lens in my hand. I have a nice 40.5mm cap to cover the front lens and butkis to cover the back.

I look around and saw the Kodak cap and gave it a try. It's not a perfect fit, but it kind of snaps in place and lets me cover the glass. That's as good as it gets.

Generally, I find that rear lens caps are scarcer than hen's teeth. Ever try to find a rear lens cap for Nikkor 5.0cm/f1.4? Seems all of these lenses were sold as kit lenses already mounted on various "S" models.

I am guessing that there are hazardous waste dump sites outside of various now-closed US military bases PX's in Japan wherein lie thousands of rear lens caps for Nikkor 5.0cm's! And they all have "EP" stamped somewhere on them! 😀

Flush with the success of the milk bottle fems cap for my collapsible fed lens, I saw this thread and descended to the laboratory.

There seem to be at least varieties of Kodak plastic film can caps. One with a big dimple in the middle, and one with a little dimple. The big dimple doesn't work. The one with the little dimple does, sort of.

Paring off the little dimple makes it fit better. Gently heating the cap and bulging out the center with your thumb makes it fit even better.

Turning the end of a hard wood dowel to approximate the radius of the J-12 rear element, rewarming the cap in hot water and forming a more uniform bulge by pressing it into a hole in a hardwood block supporting the rim of the cap makes a splendid fit.

... I need to get a life.

My J12 has the bottom of the Kodak plastic tub as the rear cap. It doesn't 'clip' on but just sits over the end up against the rear of the focus tabs.

My J8 has the Kodak lid type rear cap from the Kiev survival site.

I've also found that removing the outer rim on a Kodak cap but leaving the inner one allows it to be used as a lens cap for Contaflex 50mm lenses.
