Quiet and Small SLRs

For older SLR film cameras I have not found one to be really quiet in the shutter noise department. For small size the OM series of Olympus, recommended by many on this thread, is nice as is the Pentax ME/MX series. They are cheap to buy, the Pentax, and the lenses are good as any others. I got a very good condition ME with a 28/2.8 and a 50/2 for about $75 US. In something a bit larger the Nikon FM/FE series has a lot going for it.

Here's another vote for any of the Canon Elan cameras. I use an Elan 7 presently and while it is not perfect (AF hunts in low light or even low-contrast situations), it is quite pleasant to use and is extraordinarily quiet for an automated 35mm SLR. One of the things I really like about it is how much it just fades into the background while shooting.

OM-2 (only the single digit version). Any OM-1, 3, or 4 are fine in any version. Many Zuiko lenses are world class. I felt sorrier when I sold my OM-1 than when I sold my M6, no idea why. Perhaps it's because I love my S3-2000 more than any M, the OM and lenses were just FUN.

Everything else is but a copy.
