Finally the first pics form this Steinheil lens. Unfortunately on Delta 3200 film EI 1600, which got underdeveloped because the D76 was a little too cold I'm afraid. I will get a proper thermometer soon.
Anyway, the three shots are at f2, f4 and f8. At AE on the CLE means overexposure on the first two, but the film can take that I guess. Or the CLE has a hidden feature for correcting this, a 1/2000 shutter speed? Who knows?
Then after reading the NeatImage thread I tried it and it works miracles on the gigantic grain the negatives had.

The lens is somewhat coated, but not much I think. Hardly any coloured reflection from the front surface.
I think I will love this lens.

I modified my Leica IIf to be able to close focus the Quinon. The lens has coupling down to 60cm (almost 24 feet), but the standard rangefinder arm does not go that far. Mine does now! 😀

cheers, Rob.

that looks to be a very nice lens Rob, the OOF areas have a similar pleasing look, like that produced with a J-8. I think this lens will be used by you alot.

Oh yes, you can count on that. I have to search for comparison shots with the Canon 1,2 and the 50's Rigid Summicron, cooming up later.
The Quinon will probably be used most near wide open. Focus seems a little soft but OOF is incredible.
Maybe this will be my favorite Barnack, if it qualifies!

cheers, Rob.

I love that OOF Rob! Are these straight from the camera, or have you post processed them? It seems like you could get a much punchier photo if you increased the contrast a bit. Anyway, as it is the bokeh looks very impressionistic. Is that place in Haarlem? I loved it there when I was there with Andre and Jeanette, but I wish I had more time to explore. Sorry I missed you when I was there.

Yes it is in Haarlem.
These first photos are accidentally poor because of overexposure and underdevelopment. Thank NeatImage and VueScan for turing out like this.
IIRC no contrast boost in Photoshop.

I know of only one other Quinon, it was in a shop in Austria for something like 200 euros.
And yes, it takes Summitar filters.

So next tries will be comparisons and filter exercises.

cheers, Rob.

Rob,

The first photograph looks like it was getting close to producing the dreaded "swirlies", what do you think?

I have a Quinon as well, but in M42 semi-automatic mount. According to Arthur Cox it is supposed to be a triplet-derivative rather than a double-Gauss but I never discovered one way or the other. But I like it, and hardly ever shoot at maximum aperture.

I will check the bigger original for this, haven't noticed it yet. Maybe it is because of the shape of the tree.
My Quinon is a Sonnar design, very different to others that are called Quinon as well. Steinheil was not that original in naming lenses. Then again, almost no manufacturer was and is.
I will do a comparison of other 50mm's shortly.
cheers, Rob.
