Ok, so there is:

R-D1
R-D1s (a firmware upgrade)
R-D1x
R-D1xG (R-D1x w/ grip)

All are the same camera essentially minus firmware upgrades and the x and xG does not have a swivel viewfinder? Is this correct? And what is the difference between the R-D1s and the R-D1x ? I ask as I am seriously considering buying one used when I go back to Japan as I See a lot of them for sale there.

No difference between the last two except for the firmware-update, AFAIK. If you update the R-D1, it "is" a R-D1s.

i would have thought that the rd1 would not have kept it's price so long.
the rd1x is intriguing but i wonder if its worth the price difference?

Yes to all of the above. Mint condition RD-1 -s in Japan in the USD 1,600 price range. I've only seen one single RD-1x (new) online with Matsuiya store for a little bit less than USD 2,780. Keep in mind that it's a good idea to CLA the Epson with Epson Japan. If you could arrange for it yourself...good for you. Otherwise consider http://www.japanexposures.com/services/ who can get this done for you at a modest fee. The RD-1 is a great camera -warts and all. Good luck!

Having owned an early R-d1 and R-d1s, I
strongly beleive that paint quality is
different between the two.

The paint flaked off the R-d1 dramatically
like an old wooden window frame.
The paint on the R-d1s rubbed or wore
off in quite a different manner.

Does the 1xG have a bigger screen or higher resolution screen? IDK, but since the first time I saw one when the original was released was intrigued by it, and have thoguht if I had to go any rangefinder it would be the Epson. It's depressing to see no R-D2

I believe remembering me there's a difference around the hotshoe - screws or something - the method to align the VF - I have seen it in the forum - but I can't exactly remember…

Somebody to confirm, or not?

Can someone tell me how can I tell if my R-D1 has been updated or not?

Whenever I read of the difference between an R-D1 and an R-D1s, it just says that the R-D1s has the firmware update. I think it has been updated, but can't find any written difference of what the software update changes are.

Hope someone can help

Does your screen show the picture right after you've taken it? Can you select RAW+JPG (menu option). There are some other differences too. But the clincher is reading out the SW version form the LCD brightness menu (logical isn't it). R-D1s firmware on a R-D1 should read version 2.

Brilliant Ezzie, thanks very much. I haven't tinkered with the menus really since I first got the camera. It is indeed the updated version.

Cheers
