Waiting for my R-D1 from Robert White. Tracking shows it in US Customs since yesterday. Any idea how long Customs folks will play with it before letting it go?

I dont know about US customs, but it can stay a few days in Customs here in Germany. you must bursting with impatience!

Not sure if it was and ad here or someone on the RFF mentioning a good experience with RW. But yes, the RFF is certainly to blame for this purchase ;)

Which carrier are you using? The majors here (UK) - Fedex, DHL, UPS clear the same day but this is not the first time I've heard of US customs being slow - I've fallen foul of selling things on ebay to people in the US who are unfamiliar with buying out of state, never mind out of the country and get jittery with the negative feedback.

Fedex, DHL, UPS clear the same day in the Netherlands too.
That's their power.
But my Sony AIBO dog was shipped from Texas to Amsterdam by post and it was held
in customs for two weeks.
Just because the Postal service works quite slow.
Very frustrating when you know that it has arrived, but you still have to wait.

The R-D1 was shipped via Parcelforce (EMS) International Datapost. As of today. it still says:

Date Time Location Tracking Event
22-06-2006 19:26 Delivery Agent - NEW YORK -PTT Awaiting Customs Clearance

Parcelforce are the mainstream shipper in the UK for non-urgent parcels in the UK and International Datapost is their "express" service, handled by an agent, EMS. That kind of explains why it's slow, but it will have cost rather less than DHL/UPS/Fedex. Enjoy the camera when it (eventually) turns up.

One thing to watch out for is how the tracking system handles items that are being held for payment of duties/taxes.

For example: Shipments from the US to the UK via EMS behave rather strangely. Using http://www.usps.com/ to track works until items are held in the UK for payment of duties. The system then says "attempted delivery."

If you now go to the UK's www.parcelforce.com site, and enter the EMS tracking # and choose the option of an incoming international parcel you get a new tracking number to use in the future and the real status. For payment of duties you then have to wait for a letter with a reference number in order to make payment. When delivery has been made the usps tracking then gives the correct status.

This morning, the tracking info reads: "On route to delivery depot", which I am hoping means it's left Customs.
