So the Rd-1s is just a firmware upgrade? Is that a user upgrade, or does it have to go to an Epson service center? Apologies for the dumb question - I'm just beginning to consider whether to purchase one of these.

Its primarily a firmware upgrade and in some ways the R-D1 body is more desirable - its easier to field adjust the rangefinder alignment due to better access through the hotshoe. Something to bear in mind for the future when this camera is completely out of support and we're treating it with the same awe as a black SP 😱

Easily done by the end user, just a question of copying the new firmware to a memory card and pressing a few buttons. Its a very big usability upgrade and recommended although it does adversely affect battery performance. Full details on Rich Cutler's site
