Some of you might have noticed my comments on the "problems with R-D1" thread here. My first R-D1 had a sticky shutter problem, so I sent it back to Robert White. Funny enough, it worked when it arrived back in the UK, so perhaps it just needed a little abuse from UPS to straighten it out.

Nevertheless, Matt Sampson at Robert White not only refrained from rolling his eyes at me for sending back a perfectly good R-D1, but he went ahead and shot a hundred or so test shots on the new, checking the shutter, finder alignment and generally putting it through its paces. (This was all done with my approval, of course.) Furthermore, he was nice enough to take out the 1GB Extreme III SD card which I had left in the old body and move it to the new one prior to shipment. (He even left his test shots on, which was fun. Robert owns a very nice Landy which was in the parking lot that day, apparently.) So, at the risk of sounding like a log-rolling shill, I think it would only be correct to publicly commend Matt and the Robert White team for going far, far above and beyond the typical resale experience and making an absolute pleasure out of the precarious business of buying an R-D1 (or any other high-end camera gear, for that matter). My business goes to them from now on, even if they weren't less expensive than most reputable local retailers in NYC (which they are). So, thanks again Matt!

Anyway, it's too early to give my full impressions of the R-D1. I will say it's a very substantial body (one of my concerns was that it would be a little cheap feeling). It
feels good and tough. I'm shooting with a CZ 28/2.8 Biogon and loving that. The R-D1's 28mm frame lines are bothersome, but not really a problem. Overall, shooting with this camera is a total pleasure. It certainly gets noticed by serious camera junkies on the street, which is a blessing and a burden, I suppose.

Most importantly, it has forced me to rethink my approach to shooting, which was growing stale and boring with the digital SLR I was using. If you're curious to see images I've shot with the R-D1, check out page two of my current gallery at:

It's nice to know that old-fashioned, excellent customer service still exists somewhere in the world. "Bully" for Robert White.

Good to know about Robert White. My experiences are with PhotoVillage and CameraQuest. Both have been excellent.

Agreed - first class service, a real passion for cameras, and proper informed advice (i.e. not just trying to sell you something...)
