R-D1 number 4 letting me down, uhhhh....

I think everyone was doing a good job helping the guy w/ the problem. He had legitimate issues with the other Epsons, and wasn't too far off thinking yet another had issues.

Your reply is rude and pointless. We are not a dpreview type of forum. If you looking to fight, find it there. Believe it or not, we actually help people here.

Well put, though I happen to like the Oly forum on dpreview.com.

Weird question. I honestly think that looks like a reflection in one of the elements, not a filter (could be wronge), does Leica coat both sides? For many maufacturers that is a new thing to do since CCDs are often shiny and cause reflections.

That is lens flare.

You are ruining it for everyone else by sending back perfectly good cameras. Please get rid of your R-D1 if you don't understand anything about optics. You'll be doing yourself and everyone who has legitimate problems with their R-D1 a huge favor.

Hmmm, what's your problem...?
All the other R-D1's sent back to Epson had some major issues that
even Epson admitted to be "way off" so do yourself a favor and stop
making such ignorant remarks...

And to all the other's:

Thanks for all the help, the problem was the filter, when i removed
it, the flare was gone, i'm very happy it was an easy solution...

Thanks ....

Alexander, I'm happy to hear this. After three bodies with issues I'd look for problems in the body and not on a filter, too.
Sometimes it takes more than two eyes to see :)

Good news it's a simple solution!

Fantastic news, really, and what relief for you!

Over the past year, I've very slowly become a "no filter" convert, after noticing that one of my old lenses with no filter always seemed to have no ,or far less problem with night lights, and I take a lot of night shots with bright lights potentially a flare issue.

With my RD-1 and 28 Cron, used extentively at night, there is no flare. It's really remarkable, and this lens also has no filter.

I didn't intend for my post to digress into a debate over filters, just stating what I've noticed myself.

Glad this RD-1 sample is going to work after all. Going through three bad ones would drive me batty.

I rarely use filters, and, to be honest, I didn't know they could contribute to flare so much, and in the past I've been a bit skeptical about stories of filters causing flare. I've been taking pictures for forty years or so, so I've probably just been lucky!

This thread has been very useful, so thankyou to all who contributed. As a relative newcomer to using forums, I'm amazed at how much I've learned from the shared knowledge here.

Even without a strong highlight, filters can cause flare. On this image, the bright red of the dude is echoed in a faint red patch on the left of the frame as a reflection (of light bouncing off the film) caused by the filter.

I normally don't like to use filters, but this shot was taken at Burning Man where I wanted all the protection I could get from the daily dust storms.

It was a Hoya 39E Filter...

No matter the filter IMHO.
I've got ghost images in night shots with Leica filters as well.
See this one with a Hoya Super HMC PR01 where multicoating is applied on both surfaces.
Best,
