I know, R-D1 can upgrade to R-D1S with latest firmware; my question is, is there any hardware difference between? Or maybe Epson did improve some parts and solve some problems while producing R-D1S?
I'm looking to get one, if the difference is only software, I see no point to spent $200 more.

No difference. But if the "S" available for your purchase is newer and with less "mileage", it may be worth the $200.

It is possible that the quality control was improved with R-D1s, but there is little more than anecdotal evidence for this.

The R-D1 and R-D1s are different as far as my bodies are concerned.
With the latter, the screw dedicated to RF vertical alignment has not the same orientation and is smaller than that of the R-D1.
Also that screw is now inactive so that the only way to adjust vertical misalignments with the R-D1s consists in removing the top plate of the camera instead of the hot shoe with the R-D1.
Better know a good craftsman when the R-D1s is out of warranty.

LCT's bodies are different, he says. Could be production variation in the 10,000 units (if they made that many) of the factory run. For something made in such (relative) low numbers, a production variation/refinement (?) is possible. But not necessarily an improvement.

Not difficult to check guys. If you have a R-D1s, do what i did and what my repairer did as well: remove the hot shoe and try to adjust the vertical alignment. Then come back and share your personal experience with us. Easy no?
