Howdy ya'll.

First time poster here, about to leap into the wonderful world of RF....

Planning to grab myself a R-D1 very very soon, and am wondering if any of you have direct experience with the R-D1s AND the R-D1x.

What are the main differences, and given the current prices of both the x model and the Leica m8, would the added cost of the x over the older R-D1 be worth it?

As far as I can tell its just a bigger LCD, compatibility with SDHC, and some image processing developments (which I assume would only affect jpeg?)

Cheers,

Floyd

I don't think there is any difference between the r-d1 and r-d1x in quality of files they produce.
I chose the r-d1x over the older version simply because it is a newer camera and I prefer the larger screen which doesn't move and has less chances of breaking.
Also, it is easier to repair it ( at least here in Japan) than the m8 which doesn't have any more support from leica if the LCD breaks.

In brief: same image quality, same build, except the screen which can be turned (and protected) with the R-D1/s and is fix on the R-D1x (tiny bit larger screen size on the x). The R-D1x accepts modern faster SDHC cards, the R-D1/D1s are limited to 2GB cards.
Owning a R-D1 and M8, I'd say that the R-D1 has a better grip and viewfinder, but both are great cameras. Had I not a R-D1, I'd go with a R-D1x.

Sorry for jumping in here, but I think also about buying a digital RF.
From the two Epsons I would prefere the older R-D1 just because of the turning screen. I mean, how cool is that, he? To shoot digital with no screen on the back... 😀

But whats about the M8. They go up 1200 Euro, so only a few hundred Euros more than an R-D1.

Would that more spend money be the better way??? 😕

there are no differences besides the screen and the text printed on the front.

and except one other big difference...
the x/g can handle much larger sd cards. the regular rd1's can only use 2gb of an sd card, anything over that is not recognized - this could be a deciding factor if you're the type of person who takes hundreds of photos a day with your camera. that being said though because it's only a 6mp sensor it takes a while to fill up a 2gb card.

The m8 performs better at low ISO and has better resolution, the R-D1 performs better at high ISO and has more film like file look.
But as I mentioned earlier since the the R-D1x are still sold in Japan new, they have full support from Epson (at least the R-D1x model) while there is no more full support for m8 from leica. If the LCD goes bad the camera becomes unusable. If only it had analog controls like the R-D1 than maybe it would be still worth the risk for me to get one, but since you have to access most of the camera functions on m8 through LCD, personally I gave up on the idea of owning one again.

Yeah wow....if the service period for RD1 ends this year, thats another fairly major reason to get the x model instead....

The service period for the R-D1 ended on April 30th, 2013. I asked if I could send one in a day or two past the deadline and Epson said no.

You've got until September 30th, 2016 with the R-D1s.

wow that really sucks.....R-D1s or x it is for me then! Then ill be immediately sending it to Epson for a COMPLETE service and repair/replacement of anything they deem necessary....

This is a pretty significant issue. Perhaps it should be added to the R-D1 info repository. Not sure how possible that is, considering its not maintained or updated anymore I believe....

Bellamy at Japancamerahunter has confirmed that the R-D1 can still be serviced by Epson without any problem. About 20,000JPY

Cheers

I don't know why Epson would be so arbitrary.....I don't believe its a parts issue more like some bean counter (I'm a CPA so don't throw rocks at me ... or do either way). Such a throw away society.......

That's interesting. He's the one who called Epson for me and asked if I could send the camera in a few days past the deadline. I was in Istanbul at the time so couldn't call them myself. When did Bellamy say that?

Maybe - I originally asked him about sending an R-D1 for a spruce up and he replied with prices etc. When I asked him about the 'deadline' he said it was 'misinformation' and that he had 'sent cameras to them very recently with no problems'

Tbh I can't see why Epson wouldn't work on any R-D1 as they are all pretty much the same - it wouldn't make sense to phase it out based upon model numbers. For warranty work, yes - but general servicing, which the user pays for - seems illogical.

It's entirely possible that Epson has changed their policy since April. I just emailed Bellamy asking if that is indeed the case.

FWIW the Japanese on Epson's website only says April 30th is the "end of the guaranteed to have spare parts period", so I was actually surprised to hear back from Bellamy in late April that Epson would no longer accept them.

it is highly unlikely epson will turn away any epson rd1's if you ask them to service it and pay in cash. the cameras are virtually identical except for the screen related parts.

maybe you'll be told "no" if you talk to the wrong old crusty guy at the service depot, or a fresh out of university employee who doesn't know anything about cameras but is just answering the phone and directing service calls.
