R-d1 shutter

What's the expected lifetime for the R-D1 shutter? How many shots? When it stops working how straigthforward is it to fix/put a new one in?

What other things might wear out after long time/heavy use?

How difficult a camera the R-D1 is for a professional camera repair person to fix if it breaks down? Epson will fix the cameras for a few more years, right? But it's expensive isn't it?

by the time the RD1's shutter wears out, the RD will be a hopeless outdated digital camera, not worth the expense of installing a new shutter.

Only Epson, or Epson authorized techs with the Epson test apparatus, will be able to install the shutter. Likewise, they will be the only repair shops which will have replacement shutters to install anyway.

I doubt very much if repairs for the RD1 will be available long term. Three years? Maybe. Time will tell.

Ouch Steve.... while I have not opened the RD-1 nor will I likely ever, it seems that most cameras are easily fixed, sometimes it's just a jammed gear etc. I predict that someone out there will make a cottaage industry of keeping Rd-1's in tune. I had no trepedation adjusting viewfinder alignement of my first RD-1.

I PREDICT THAT THE RD-1 WILL BE A CULT CLASSIC OF SORTS THAT WILL LIVE ON FOR MORE THAN A DECADE.... (that said after mine just sold on E-bay). I miss it but have too much $$$ in equipment.

a model in the digital capture world only gets outdated when the next best thing comes along to replace it.
Given the M8 is not it for the RD-1, I guess the introduction of the next DRF is most likely when RD1s will be replaced. I hope mine keeps on ticking until then

Which raises another question: given no continuous shooting with the RD1, users would probably have much less actuations /year than DSLRs...does that make sense?

That would seem to make sense. I am amazed at how high/how fast some people can get the count on relatively recently-purchased DSLRs.

Hey Steve, I thought Epson had pledged parts availability and support for 6 years?

I thought there was actually a federal requirement (the Magnuson Moss act) that required parts availability for some period after sales stop? I could be wrong; I think I read that in the context of a discussion about parts for the F3.

There have been a number of shutter failures on the RD-1, I don't think they were "worn out" though. Several people had them repaired by Steve Choi, I had mine fixed by Epson, who said they replaced the shutter mechanism....

I have maintained this ever since I bought mine about a year ago. I got a second one as a backup/spare parts donor. The quality of photos and the retro all manual operation will make this a classic long after the M8 has been superceded.
