Greetings from Germany,

my name is Florian and I'm completely new to this forum, so forgive me if I'm breaking any rules within this post.

I love my Bessas (R & R4A). Now I want to sell my dslr and buy an Epson R-D1, but I can not find a body in Germany anywhere! :bang:

Is here anyone willing to sell his R-d1? You are my last chance! I can't afford an M8 and by the way I don't like it very much (Leica sent me an Leica M8.2 with an Summilux to test it).

I am happy to say HELLO to this community in an active way. I'm already reading for about a month here. So:

Hi Florian,

When I was hunting for my R-D1, I bid on a couple on Ebay that were from sellers based in Germany.
If you want to be a 100% sure you don't pay any import taxes I would try to look for one within the European Union.

And welcome to the RFF, where the natives are friendly. ;)

I would certainly expect to pay taxes. I bought a lens from Stephen Gandy (CameraQuest.com, US) some time ago and I had to go to the Zoll in Bochum. The guy there was so 'interested' that he even unpacked the lens and played with it.

I'm living only ten minutes away from you, so if you want to test the R-D1 and look to some images before buying it, just send me a PM :)
 
Look at ebay, there is actually a R-D1s from a guy in Bonn. Maybe, he will let have you a look on it before bidding or you can pick it up after auctions ending.

The one in Bonn sounds like a possibility without taxes. But its somehow scary, that it went back to Epson for warranty. Even that he says, that it was exchanged completely.

I'm so excited to get the camera body. I'd like to order it from the japanese ebay shop matsuiya, but it will take a long time to get here. so i can wait for ebay.de (bonn) pricing.

The exchange fom Epson in case of repair was a common procedure with this camera. Many received a different body, nothing to be worried about.
 
Hi Florian!

If you buy a R-D1 from outside the EU and it is shipped to you here then you will have to pay 19% MwSt and maybe (I am not sure of this) an additional 4% duties. You could send an email to any one of the customs offices and ask what the percent is for an imported digital camera:

If you prefer to buy a used camera within Germany or the EU then make sure to pay with paypal so that you have some sort of insurance in the event the camera is not in the described condition.

Attached is a table of ending prices for some of the R-D1 auctions I was watching over the years. As you can see, used prices are all over the place!

Thanks for the auction overview and the import info! Does this also happen even if I buy an used one? Or may a letter with "thanks for borrowing the camera" within the packeage help?

Yes, sales tax and import duties are levied with used equipment as well, no matter what it's type. There are free allowances for up to a certain value/amount but a used R-D1 will exceed that.

When an imported camera reaches Germany its first stop is the Frankfurt International Airport. There the central customs office and the German postal carrier DHL sit together and one of them opens up the box and peeks inside. If they think duties should be levied, they will mark the box and then seal it with customs tape with the green letters "Zoll" on it.

Most likely the camera will then be sent to your local customs office and DHL will send you a notification telling you that you must go to that customs office and bring the paperwork before you can take possession of the shipment.

Gifts over a certain amount are taxed just like any other item. If the seller claims a gift value far below the actual value the customs people will suspect this and, while you are waiting in the reception area, perform a search in google and/or ebay and try to determine a realistic value of the item.

In order to save time and a possible legal dispute, you can simply send a print-out of the ebay auction you won to the local customs office, instructing them to calculate the fees and send you your shipment.

A postal carrier will then turn up at your door 10 to 14 days later, requesting the money in exchange for the package. A used R-D1 costing 1000 Euro could therefore set you back an additional 190 to 230 Euro.

As I remember, in Germany Mehrwertsteuer (VAT) is calculated on top of the sum of the price of the item + import tax ...

You're absolutely right but customs have not always the time to do searches like that in practice so with a bit of chance, VAT and customs duties may be calculated on the declared value instead.
Now the same declared value will be used for insurance as well so it's hardly a winning-winning deal in case of damage to the camera needless to say.
