Following on from a recent thread on batteries for the R-D1, I contacted Epson Germany about buying an additional charger as it wasn't listed in their online shop.

The first person I contacted tried to tell me that the R-D1 had its charger built in! I then sent him a link to the R-D1 manual which shows a separate charger. I was then contacted by a second person who advised me I could buy the charger from 2 companies that distributed spare parts for Epson.

The battery charger costs Euro 126.15 from one and Euro 108.75 from the other. Pretty expensive! Has anyone tried charging the Epson battery with a Fuji NP80 compatible charger? Would the lower rating of the 3rd party batteries mean the Epson battery wouldn't be fully charged (I know nothing about battery chemistry and electronics).

Interestingly, one of them has a pdf diagram which shows an exploded view of the R-D1.

It seems you can buy most of the small parts, excluding the body frame, main body covers, the rear LCD and the large analogue dial. Some people complained that the rubber grip was coming off - it looks like you can buy new rubber parts as well as the adhesive.

Cheers,
Nick

I see part 125 is called 'usb cover' - does anyone know if there is actually a usb port under the cover?

The diagram seems to indicate there is a USB port next to the SD card slot - perhaps omitted at the last moment due to cost? Or does the R-D1s have a USB port?

Yes, it does have a port. You can easily pull off the cover with single/double sided adhesive tape to reveal the connector. However I believe no one has been able to get a PC to communicate with it.

Bob.

I notice on the Gedat Datentechnik site there are three CD-ROMs listed:

#3020697 Application CD-ROM
#3021328 Application CD-ROM
#3021879 Software CD-ROM,Euro,DEFGIS

My retail package contained 2 copies of Photoshop Elements and the Epson Software CD.

Does anyone know what the listed CDs are, maybe one is a service CD. :D I see the prices are marked a.A. as are some other items.

The USB port is probably there for service techs to use for diagnostic purposes.

The prices are obscene - €10 for a washer?

There are various OEM battery chargers available including ones which run from a car power socket - useful - but I don't think many here will be interested in using them in case their camera self-destructs.

Cost, about £35, €50.

Given the price for the original, I'll be picking up a 3rd party charger. I saw one from Unomat for less than CHF40 (abt £18).
