I'm currently shopping (mostly on eBay) for a R-D1, but got a bit confused by price points of R-D1 vs R-D1s. My questions are:

What functional (h/w and s/w) differences are there between R-D1 w/ firmware upgraded vs. a R-D1s?

From what I've read, I dont think there is any... but if that's the case, why do you think a R-D1s is usually sold for more than a R-D1 w/ upgrade?

And I have a dumb question: What brand/model are ppl here refering to when they write CV lenses?

Thanks,
Wai

There is no hardware difference between the two, it is just a firmware upgrade which you can perform yourself. Off the top of my head I think the differences are:

Pictures can be reviewed at greater magnification.
Addition of Adobe RGB colour space.
Display mode (histogram etc) is retained after camera is switched off.
Some noise reduction at higher ISO setting.
Increased buffering.

The difference in price is simply because the 's' is seen as a slightly superior model.

I would go for the cheaper model, and if you think the upgrade worthwhile, do it yourself. It is available here:

Incidentally it is worth browsing Rich's site as it contains a wealth of information about the R-D1.

I own both. I cannot adjust vertical RF misalignments through the hotshoe of my R-D1s. No problem with the R-D1 so my favorite is the latter. Otherwise they are exactly the same camera.

Another feature both the upgraded firmware R-D1 the R-D1s have is the RAW+JPG ability, not just RAW or JPG

Hi LCT,
I thought they are different, but http://www.richcutler.co.uk/r-d1/r-d1_links.htm this web said they are the same which you can adjust alignment in hot shoe of RD1s. So you have confirmed they are different?...
I do confirm that mines are different. I am not alone BTW. Do a search in the forum and you'll see that some other R-D1s owners can not adjust vertical misalignment though the hot shoe either. Looks like the vertical alignment screw is inactive or glued in some bodies i don't know. My best advice is to choose the original R-D1 if you can, unless you are sure that the R-D1s you're after is not like mine of course.

Dear all, you guys have been the most helpful. Thank you very much!!!

The discussion has settled the issue for me - I'd just get the R-D1 w/ upgrade or just do it myself. I am gonna be a "user", not collector, and the $200 or so saved from not having the "s" could be used for funding a better lens.

Thanks again!

Guys, one quick question -- When shooting RAW+JPG with a R-D1s, how many consecutive shots do you get before needing to wait for the buffer to clear?

Many thanks.
