R-D1 vs Nikon D70S

No competition for me ... as good as the D70 is it's no match for an RD-1 IMO!

I had a D70s and it was nearly unusable above 800 ISO ... nice DSLR though for something that doesn't cost much at all these days!
 
I have a D70 as well. Excellent little camera. With good lenses (45/2.8, 180/2.8 for inst.) its results are very good with the Nikon raw converter up to 1000 iso, and with Capture One v4 up to 1600 iso. It is a bit sharper than the R-D1 out of the camera but the latter makes generally nicer images with Leica lenses at least.

I completely agree - the RD-1 was my favourite high ISO camera - quite a contrast to the ugly mess I got out of the D70s...
 
the IQ at iso1600 on the R-D1 is really incredible. sometimes it has more color noise than I'd like it to, but well, for a 2004 6mp camera it ain't bad at all. And it's much better than the M8's...
 
I love both cameras but I won't go above ISO 400 on the D70. For outdoor shooting with flash I really appreciate the 1/2000 sync speed I can squeeze out of it (with pocket wizard multimaxes, of course).
 
My sister has the D70s. I takes nice pictures, but the R-D1 is better in my mind, mostly wrt low light and the fact that there´s much better glass to be had (at a reasonable price too). The RAW files are also very good (and large). They are the same size as my 12Mpix D2X RAW files, averaging 9.6MB!
 
The best thing about the D70 is that the standard flash sync goes to 1/500th (still rare in a dslr these days), and will sync all the way to 1/4,000th and above because the D70 has both a focal plane shutter and an electronic shutter.

If you want to use fill flash in bright daylight *and* shoot wide aperture, you can do it with a D70 easily.
