R-D1 with a Nokton 40mm

I've used this combination as well. The lens handles well on the camera and picture quality is really good.

One potential "gotcha": The 35mm framelines work fine at infinity but become progressively "tighter" as you focus closer. Once you're closer than about 8 feet, the framelines will show more than you get in the final picture -- so beware of composing all the way out to the edges, or else some of what you expected in the image will be cropped off!

The 40mm behaves like a 60mm on the RD. Thats a very unusual focal length but I really like it. Sort of a short portrait lens . Really handy for closups inside, and with great bokah wide open. Highly recommended.

I have used my friends 40mm Nokton on my R-D1 on a few occassions and although I already have a 35mm Cron I'm impressed enough to want to buy one myself. BUT do I go for the normal multicoated (which my friend has) OR the single coated version. In theory at least the lower contrast of the single coated version should suit the R-D1 better, but while not a major problem I have noticed more susceptibility to flare from the sensor in the R-D1 than when using the same lenses on film (no filters used on lens). Also I'd like to take full advantage of the extra f stop over the Cron and again in theory at least multicoated lenses maximise light transmission over single coated.

Has anyone used the single coated Nokton on the R-D1 or better still compared the single and multicoated version on it?

Although the single coated version was originally more expensive Robert White now sells both lenses for the same price.

Here's one with the SC lens. Wonderfully sharp, but nice for portraits as well. The Sidi Bou Said photos in my gallery are examples of the lens in colour.

Thanks Jim - I did some tests at f1.4 but seem to have erased them. Bokeh seemed OK, but you are aware (I am sure) that this is a controversial issue with this lens.

Yes, I have shot at f1.4 with my friends MC version. On this the Bokeh is not perhaps as nice as my Cron at f2, but the exra stop is worthwhile in some stiuations even with the R-D1 at 1600 iso.
